2. Preparation for the essay "Structure of a Text" No. 5
I. STRUCTURE OF A TEXT
1. The text consists of three parts:
- Introduction (from the beginning to "fame and fortune"): provides an overview of the character Chu Văn An.
- Body (from "Students followed him" to "not allowed to visit."): illustrates the qualities of Chu Văn An's "high morals and profound virtue" as a teacher.
- Conclusion (from "When he passed away" to the end): expresses the respect and admiration people had for Chu Văn An after his death.
2.
- Introduction: “Chu Văn An, a well-known teacher during the Trần dynasty, was known for his firmness and lack of interest in fame and wealth.” This introduces the character and the story to be told.
- Body: narrates the story of Chu Văn An teaching. His attitude toward King Dụ Tông, his inability to change the king's mind, and his return to his village after resigning from his position. His students, from high-ranking officials to commoners, held him in high regard.
- Conclusion: includes two statements about Chu Văn An after his death. “When he passed away, everyone mourned his loss. He was honored at the Văn Miếu in the capital city of Thăng Long.”
3.
The relationship between the sections in this text structure can be analyzed as follows:
- A text is a product of communication through language. It is a unified and complete entity in terms of both content and form. Therefore, the relationship between the sections of the text must be cohesive and consistent.
4. The structure of the text consists of three parts
The function of each section in the text:
- The introduction: introduces the content and grabs the reader’s attention.
- The body: develops and specifically addresses the issue introduced in the introduction, maintaining the reader’s attention.
- The conclusion: summarizes and satisfies the reader's expectations.
The sections of the text are developed and unified to express the text's main theme.
II. ARRANGEMENT AND ORGANIZATION OF THE BODY SECTION OF A TEXT
1. The body of Thanh Tịnh's text "I Went to School" is structured based on a memoir: recalling events and details from the first day of school.
2. Nguyên Hồng's text "In My Mother's Arms" primarily presents the emotional journey of the young boy Hồng.
- He is a boy who deeply loves his mother, despite his aunt's harsh words about her.
- A striking and impressive moment in the narrative is when the boy remembers reuniting with his mother. (His immense joy at being held in his mother's arms, stroked and pampered…)
3. Depending on the subject and purpose of description, one may choose to describe from general to specific or the reverse. Some common ways to arrange descriptions include:
- Describing a person: from appearance to thoughts, emotions, and character, or vice versa. One can begin by narrating the biography (background, age, occupation, social status, etc.) before portraying the person's portrait and character.
- Describing an object or animal: from general characteristics to specific details of each part or section.
- Describing a scene: from general to specific, from afar to near, from high to low or vice versa. One may also describe various aspects of the scene: sound, light, color, shape, etc.
4. The body section in the essay "The Teacher of High Virtue" presents ideas that clarify the thesis. These ideas are arranged in a specific order.
The analysis demonstrates the argument that "Chu Văn An was a teacher of high virtue."
We see that the body section unfolds the character of Chu Văn An step by step:
- He had many students.
- Many of them passed high exams.
- Thus, the king "summoned him to teach the crown prince."
- However, during the reign of Dụ Tông, "the king preferred pleasure and neglected state affairs, surrounding himself with sycophants." Despite his repeated attempts to advise the king, Chu Văn An resigned and returned to his village.
This presentation presents arguments supporting the claim that Chu Văn An was a wise teacher and a loyal servant with high moral integrity, thereby reinforcing the thesis that "Chu Văn An was a teacher of high virtue."
The last two sentences of this section provide concrete supporting evidence for his "high virtue".
5. The content of the body section can be organized in several ways: (space-time, general-specific, issue development, reasoning, associations, etc.)
- In general, one may have flexibility in organizing the body section, as long as it ensures thematic consistency and logical flow, making it easier for the reader to absorb the content presented.
III. EXERCISES
Exercise 1:
a: Describe the crowded and noisy bird yard.
Structure: three parts, from general to specific, from afar to near.

- Ba Vì – around Ba Vì.
- Specifically about Ba Vì, arranged in chronological order.
c: Two arguments arranged based on their importance to the thesis:
- "History is often filled with painful pages... Let’s look at the story of the Hai Bà Trưng to see..."
- "When I hear the story of Phù Đổng Thiên Vương, I always imagine a heroic man..." (Leaping into Hồ Tây for a bath, then mounting his horse with wounds…)
Exercise 2: If I had to present the love of mother by the boy Hồng in the text "In My Mother’s Arms", I would organize it as follows:
- Highlight the boy Hồng's emotions and attitude when speaking to his aunt about his mother.

- Due to his constant longing and love for his mother, the boy Hồng chases after her at the sight of her in a palanquin.
- Recount moments of great joy when the boy Hồng is reunited with his mother.
Exercise 3: Ideas can be grouped into two categories: explaining the proverb and proving its truthfulness.
- Literal and figurative meanings of the phrase "A day of travel brings wisdom";
- Literal and figurative meanings of the phrase "Learning brings wisdom";
- Leaders traveling to find a way to save the country;
- Those who actively integrate into life gain better understanding and learn many valuable lessons;
