I. METHODS FOR WRITING A PARAGRAPH OR ESSAY DESCRIBING A PERSON
Question 1. Read the following paragraphs:
Paragraph 1: "Dượng Hương Thư looked like a bronze statue, his muscles bulging, his teeth clenched, his jaw protruding, and his eyes blazing as he gripped the pole like a heroic knight of the majestic Trường Sơn. Dượng Hương Thư, while overcoming the rapids, was completely different from the gentle and soft-spoken Dượng Hương Thư at home, who always responded politely to everyone."
(Võ Quảng, Overcoming the Rapids - excerpt from Quê nội)
Paragraph 2: "Cai Tứ was a short and thin man, around forty-five to fifty years old. His face was square but with sunken cheeks. Beneath his bushy eyebrows, his cunning eyes sparkled on his bony face. His nose had a prominent bridge, and his mustache seemed to hide his wide, dark mouth, which resembled a cave, with a few gold teeth gleaming inside."
(Lan Khai)
Paragraph 3: "The elderly referee, dressed in traditional attire, sat solemnly on a white mat with a red border. He raised the red drumstick and struck the drum three times, signaling the start of the match. Quắm Đen stepped into the ring. At that moment, ông Cản Ngũ also descended from the high platform. The crowd erupted in cheers. From the first drumbeat, Quắm Đen aggressively attacked ông Cản Ngũ with relentless and cunning moves. Clearly, he wanted to use his youthful strength to overpower ông Cản Ngũ and defeat him quickly with tricky and dangerous techniques. He feinted left, struck right, attacked high and low, constantly changing his tactics. In contrast, ông Cản Ngũ appeared slow and clumsy, seemingly overwhelmed by Quắm Đen's continuous attacks. His arms were always spread wide, close to the ground, fumbling to defend himself. The match seemed dull [...] Suddenly, ông Cản Ngũ missed a step and stumbled. Quắm Đen, like a hawk, slipped through ông Cản Ngũ's arms and grabbed one of his legs, lifting it. The crowd roared. It seemed ông Cản Ngũ would surely fall. No matter how strong, even an elephant would fall.
The drumbeats intensified, urging the match forward. Yet, ông Cản Ngũ remained standing like a tree rooted in the ring, astonishing the spectators. Quắm Đen struggled, unable to lift ông Cản Ngũ's leg, which felt like an iron pillar rather than a human limb.
Ông Cản Ngũ stood tilted, watching Quắm Đen, drenched in sweat, beneath him. After a while, he reached down, grabbed Quắm Đen's waistband, and lifted him effortlessly, as if holding a frog tied with a string.
The wrestlers around the ring fell silent in awe of ông Cản Ngũ's immense strength. Quắm Đen had been defeated, humiliated in the most bitter way.
(Kim Lân)

Exercises
1. Here is a passage describing a person by Vũ Trọng Phụng:
Chị Doãn was a woman with the appearance of an unattractive man. Her small eyes, high cheekbones, thick lips, and vulgar figure, with fingers round and long like bananas, made her look even more ridiculous when she dressed in modern fashion! And her white teeth! The long blue dress, the white silk pants, the high-heeled shoes with straps like a dancer's, and the small scarf only emphasized her vulgarity and made her absurdity even more glaring. To top it off, while chatting, she occasionally inserted a few French phrases, showing off that she was once a schoolgirl. I suddenly had the vague impression that this woman, when away from home, must have whistled like a drunken French soldier.
(Lấy vợ xấu, in Đông Dương tạp chí, August 19, 1937)
a) What is the author's attitude toward the character Chị Doãn in this passage?
b) What evidence in the passage reveals the author's attitude?
2. Read the following passage:
Ông Nghị crossed his chopsticks over the plate, picked up the bowl of soup, and slurped loudly. Then he chewed and swallowed while urging the servant to bring a toothpick. Mr. and Mrs. Nghị each dipped three fingers into the basin, wiped their mouths, and then drank the water used for rinsing their teeth... After finishing his speech, Mr. Nghị took a big sip of tea, gargled noisily, and spat it onto the floor...
(Ngô Tất Tố, Tắt đèn)
a) Based on Ngô Tất Tố's description in the passage, what kind of person is Mr. Nghị? Choose one of the following:
A - A wealthy and noble person.
B - A rude and crude person.
C - A cunning and cruel person.
D - A polite and leisurely person.
b) What evidence supports your conclusion?
c) What is the author's attitude and feelings toward Mr. and Mrs. Nghị Quế in this passage? Choose one of the following:
A - Hatred and disdain
B - Praise and admiration
C - Hatred and accusation
D - Sympathy and approval
d) How do you know this?
3. To make descriptions vivid, people often use metaphors and comparisons. If describing a strongman, how would you associate and compare the following details?
- Broad shoulders...
- Strong arms...
- Sturdy legs...
- Bulging muscles...
- Skin tone...
4. Exercise 1, page 62, Textbook.
Guidelines
Question 1. When writing descriptive essays, the writer always expresses their attitude and feelings toward the subject or person being described. This attitude and feeling are conveyed through the description (word choice, tone, and comments). This exercise tests the ability to understand prose, specifically whether students can recognize the author's attitude through the writing style and description of the character, while also helping them review the characteristics of descriptive writing.
For this exercise, students should note the following:
a) Through the passage, the reader can sense Vũ Trọng Phụng's mocking and sarcastic attitude toward a type of person who is both unattractive and pretentious, imitating others in a ridiculous and absurd way. In reality, there are women who are not beautiful. Being unattractive is not their fault. However, being unattractive and still trying to imitate others, acting pretentiously and absurdly, is what Vũ Trọng Phụng satirizes.
b) The author's attitude can be inferred from the description, tone, and additional comments. The first part of the passage describes Chị Doãn's natural unattractiveness, which is not her fault. However, the second part highlights her pretentiousness and absurdity, which she brings upon herself. The author uses words like "trai lơ," "gái nhẩy," "mẩu khăn," "mĩ miều," "thô tục," "choáng lộn," "kệch cỡm," and even exclaims, "Răng trắng nữa trời ạ!" to emphasize her ridiculousness. Women at that time traditionally dyed their teeth black, but Chị Doãn, in the 1930s, followed the trend of having white teeth to appear modern and even inserted French phrases to show off.
Question 3. To vividly describe a strongman, provide appropriate comparisons and metaphors. For example:
Face: square and resolute, like the heroes in ancient stories.
Question 4. This exercise requires describing different subjects. Each subject should be described with representative details that help the reader immediately recognize the subject. For example:
- A 4-5-year-old child:
+ Round, chubby face
+ Big, sparkling eyes
+ Rosy lips
+ Playful and mischievous demeanor,...
- An elderly person:
+ Kind, wrinkled face
+ Snow-white hair
+ Hunched back
+ Slow movements,...
- A teacher passionately lecturing in class:
+ Petite and graceful figure
+ Thick, shoulder-length black hair
+ Gentle steps
+ Soft, captivating voice,...
When describing a teacher, pay attention to not only her appearance but also her actions while teaching. What details show her passion for teaching?
