1. Lesson Plan on 'Direct and Indirect Speech' No. 4
I. Direct Speech
Read the following excerpts (from the short story 'Silent Sapa' by Nguyễn Thành Long) and answer the questions.
a) I stayed right there at the station every month. No matter how many times the driver honked the horn, I stubbornly refused to get off. Then one day, the driver had to come up to the station himself. I said: “See, you don’t even care about ‘people’ at all?”
b) The scholar thought to himself: “The visitor came unexpectedly, probably the boy hasn’t had time to clean or fold his blanket yet.”
Question 1, page 53, 9th Grade Literature: In excerpt (a), the bold part “See, you don’t even care about ‘people’ at all?” is it a spoken or a thought of the character? How is it separated from the preceding part of the sentence?

Question 3, page 53, 9th Grade Literature: Can the position of the bold part and the preceding part be swapped in both excerpts? If yes, how are they separated?
Answer:
In both excerpts, the positions of the two parts can be swapped. In that case, the two parts are separated by quotation marks and a dash.
II. Indirect Speech
Read the following excerpts and answer the questions.
a) The old man tried to find the right words to explain to his son. He advised him to calm down and wait for a better offer, saying that if this one doesn’t work out, another would surely come. “There are still many unmarried girls in the village, no need to worry,” he said.
(Nam Cao, 'Lão Hạc')
b) But don’t misunderstand that Uncle Hồ lived in hardship like a monk, or with the refined simplicity of a hermit philosopher.
(Phạm Văn Đồng, 'Hồ Chí Minh: The Spirit and Essence of the Nation, Conscience of the Age').
Question 1, page 54, 9th Grade Literature: In excerpt (a), is the bold part spoken or thought? Is it separated from the preceding part by any specific punctuation?

Answer:
* Direct speech: In “Political Report at the Second Congress of the Party”, President Hồ Chí Minh stated: “We must remember the great contributions of our national heroes because they represent the spirit of a heroic people.” This is true. Throughout thousands of years of history, our people have fought many foreign invaders. Yet no enemy could ever defeat the hearts of those who deeply care for the fate of the nation. During over a thousand years of Chinese domination, many heroes rose to lead uprisings, such as Hai Bà Trưng, Bà Triệu, Triệu Việt Vương, Phùng Hưng... Then came the legendary figures like Trần Hưng Đạo, Lê Lợi, Quang Trung... We have every reason to be proud of these great warriors!

2. Essay on "Direct and Indirect Speech" No. 5
I - BASIC CONCEPTS TO MASTER
1. One can either directly or indirectly quote someone’s words or thoughts. Both direct and indirect quotes can be used in two ways: directly and indirectly.
- Direct quotation involves repeating the exact words or thoughts of someone or a character. These words are placed within quotation marks.
- Indirect quotation involves paraphrasing someone’s words or thoughts. The paraphrased content may be adjusted for clarity and is not placed in quotation marks.
2. In storytelling, indirect quotation is commonly used, often with words like “that” or “is”. Dialogue between characters, however, is typically presented directly using bullet points.
3. The choice between direct and indirect speech depends on the context.
II - GUIDELINES FOR ANSWERING QUESTIONS AND EXERCISES
1. Direct Speech
Question 1
The bolded part in passage (a) represents the character’s speech. It is separated from the previous section using a colon and quotation marks.
Question 2
In passage (b), the bolded part represents the character’s thoughts. It is separated from the preceding section using a colon and quotation marks.
The positions of the bolded section and the previous part can be switched. In that case, the two sections would be separated by quotation marks and a dash. For example, passage (b) could be written as: "The guest arrived unexpectedly; surely, the boy hadn’t had time to clean or fold the blanket yet" – the artist thought to himself.
2. Indirect Speech
Question 1
The bolded part in passage (a) represents speech. It does not require separation from the previous section with any punctuation marks.
Question 2
The bolded part in passage (b) represents thoughts. It is separated from the preceding section with the word “that”. The word “that” can be replaced with “is” in this context.
3. Practice Exercises
Exercise 1
- Passage (a): The part in quotation marks is direct speech.
- Passage (b): The part in quotation marks is direct speech.
Exercise 2
Choose one of the three statements below and write a paragraph expressing that statement both in direct and indirect speech. For example:
Statement (a):

- Indirect speech: In his Political Report..., President Ho Chi Minh emphasized that we must remember the contributions of the national heroes, as they are the epitome of a heroic nation.
Statement (b)
- Direct speech: Simplicity is a constant virtue of President Ho Chi Minh, as Prime Minister Pham Van Dong remarked: “Simplicity in life, in relationships with others, in his demeanor, and even in his speech and writings...”
- Indirect speech: Prime Minister Pham Van Dong believed that President Ho Chi Minh’s simplicity was evident in all aspects: in life, in relationships, in his demeanor, and in his speech and writing, because he wanted the people to understand, remember, and act upon it.
Statement (c):
- Direct speech: “The Vietnamese people today have every reason to be proud of their language,” affirmed cultural scholar Dang Thai Mai.
- Indirect speech: Cultural scholar Dang Thai Mai asserted that the Vietnamese people today have every reason to be proud of their language.
Exercise 3
Identify who is speaking in the dialogue and to whom. Determine if any parts need to be changed to third-person narration, and identify who the third person is.
For example: The next day, Linh Phi took a purple silk bag containing ten pearls and sent the messenger Xich Hon to escort Phan out of the country. Vũ Nương also sent a golden flower and instructed Phan to tell Trương that if he still remembered their past love, he should set up a ritual at the riverbank and light a magical lantern to shine down into the water, and she would return.

3. Lesson Plan: 'Direct and Indirect Speech' - Version 6
A. KEY CONCEPTS
There are two ways to report someone's words or thoughts:
Direct speech, which quotes the exact words or thoughts of the speaker or character, and these are enclosed in quotation marks.
For example: The artist thought to himself, "The guest came unexpectedly, probably the boy didn't have time to clean up, or fold the blanket, for instance."
President Ho Chi Minh reminded everyone: "We must remember the contributions of our national heroes, for they symbolize a heroic nation."
Indirect speech, on the other hand, paraphrases the words or thoughts of the speaker or character, making adjustments to fit the context, and it does not use quotation marks.
For example: President Ho Chi Minh reminded everyone that we must remember the contributions of national heroes, as they symbolize a heroic nation.
I told her that I missed her very much.
