In Nguyễn Nhật Ánh’s "The Unforeseen", the character that left the deepest impression on me is Nghi. From the start, Nghi is portrayed as an innocent, generous, and enthusiastic boy. During a dispute, while Phước and the narrator are upset, adamant about being right, and even considering a fight for revenge, Nghi surprises everyone with his actions. He seeks out the narrator and brings a football rulebook to clear up the misunderstanding. Nghi doesn’t dwell on the argument or the violation of rules; instead, he helps his friends understand the correct football rules. Nghi is not only helpful but also a sincere and positive friend. After sharing the book, Nghi invites the narrator and Phước to watch a movie, lifting their spirits and diffusing their frustration. Nghi’s sincerity and optimism inspire the others, and their friendship becomes even stronger. Nghi’s character lingers in the reader’s heart, sparking reflection and fondness.

The story in "The Unforeseen" tells of a moment when the narrator is so angry that they even consider fighting their friend, but ultimately, the situation is diffused with the help of a book, which surprises many readers. What leaves a lasting impression, however, is how the character Nghi handles the situation, impressing many, including myself. In life, we encounter many types of friends—some who pass by briefly, others who become close, and some who earn our admiration and affection. But the most remarkable are those who are forgiving and help us grow. Nghi is one of those friends. Nghi, the narrator, and Phước are classmates and football teammates. A disagreement occurs when Nghi doesn't accept the narrator's goal, leading to a dispute over the offside rule. However, Nghi's actions after this argument bring peace to the situation, and the three friends reconcile, walking arm-in-arm like close companions.
First and foremost, I see Nghi as a friend who is carefree and generous, not one to hold grudges. During the argument on the football field, while Phước and the narrator are fuming, insisting on being right and even preparing to fight, Nghi’s response completely surprises us. Instead of arguing or escalating the situation, Nghi approaches the narrator not to argue, but to offer a solution. He brings a football rulebook and casually says, “This is my brother’s football rulebook. You can borrow it, so we don’t argue about the rules next time.” This action, completely different from the narrator’s and Phước's, shows Nghi’s generosity—he is not angry, upset, or resentful. Nghi disregards the argument and helps his friends understand the proper football rules. This is something not every twelve- or thirteen-year-old would do. Most kids at this age are impulsive, hot-headed, and reluctant to forgive others. Yet, Nghi remains calm, offers the book, and ensures that future football games won’t lead to disputes.
In addition, Nghi is a sincere, positive, and cheerful friend. When he meets Phước and the narrator, he doesn’t dwell on the previous football dispute or their opponents' mistakes but instead invites them to watch a movie. Nghi’s sincerity and positivity motivate Phước and the narrator, easing their frustration and turning their moods around. Nghi spreads love, kindness, and positivity to everyone around him. This demonstrates that Nghi is a loving and forgiving person, a valuable friend.
Friends are the ones who stand by us, help us during difficult times, and lift us up when we are down. Nghi’s image in this story leaves the reader with deep reflections and emotions. Nghi is a sincere, carefree, lovable, and compassionate friend, spreading positive energy wherever he goes.

The story "The Unforeseen" addresses a conflict resolution between the narrator and Nghi during a football match. Each character approaches the problem differently, but when they choose to work together and solve the issue positively, everything becomes much easier.
Nguyễn Nhật Ánh’s story has left a strong impression on its readers. In the friendly football match, the narrator scores a brilliant goal, but Nghi calls it offside. Upset, the narrator plans to take revenge on Nghi, bringing his friend Phước along. When the narrator spots Nghi in the distance, he assumes Nghi is ready to fight. However, Nghi’s weapon is a small book on football rules. Nghi approaches the narrator, offering the book to borrow. Phước, hiding in the bushes, misses the conversation and continues to carry out their plan. The narrator quickly lies, saying Phước is just shooting birds. Later, Nghi invites both the narrator and Phước to watch a movie. The three of them happily go to the cinema together under the setting sun.
This story criticizes the use of violence to solve problems and praises the use of reason and understanding. The tale truly reflects the signature style of Nguyễn Nhật Ánh.

The story "The Unforeseen", published in the collection "Út Quyên and Me" by NXB Trẻ in Ho Chi Minh City in 2019, is one of the standout works in Nguyễn Nhật Ánh’s career.
"The Unforeseen" carries a profound lesson. The narrator, during a friendly football match, scores an amazing goal but is called offside by his friend Nghi, who mocks him for not understanding the rules. This frustrates the narrator, leading him to seek revenge. He gathers his 'weapons' and asks his friend Phước to help plan an ambush. This shows the narrator's competitive, emotional nature. However, contrary to what he planned, no fight takes place. Instead, Nghi brings the narrator a book on football rules and invites both him and Phước to go see a movie together.
Nghi’s approach helps the narrator realize his mistake. The ending of the story leaves a lasting impression on the reader, portraying a beautiful friendship: “The evening sun cast the shadows of the three of us onto the street, forming one large figure, like a giant in a fairy tale.” The story also criticizes resolving problems with violence and celebrates solving issues with reason and understanding.
