In today’s 4.0 technology era, online gaming is rapidly evolving, with a wide range of genres, strategies, and graphics styles. Originally, video games were designed to provide us with a relaxing break after stressful school or work hours. However, as these games became more popular, some students began to excessively indulge in them, leading to negative consequences.
Video games are digital entertainment created by imaginative programmers with a flair for technology. Game addiction has become an increasingly widespread phenomenon, often compared to drug addiction, where players become so absorbed that they lose touch with their surroundings.
In Vietnam, the issue of students being addicted to gaming is particularly prevalent. It’s common to find internet cafes packed with teenagers still in their school uniforms, spending hours playing games. Some even continue playing all day long. There are videos circulating online showing scenes from these internet cafes filled with students, and others depicting frustrated parents scolding their children who refuse to stop playing. These internet cafes are on the rise, equipped with advanced computers to meet the “needs” of students.
Game addiction is becoming more common for several reasons. Games are constantly evolving, created with vibrant visuals and exciting new elements to cater to the interests of players. With a variety of genres, from intellectual games to action-packed ones, these games attract students who love exploring new things. Many students lack the self-discipline to manage their gaming time and can’t stop playing once they start. Moreover, there’s a lack of awareness about the harmful effects of excessive gaming, and many parents are too busy with work to monitor their children, leaving them to seek refuge in video games.
This issue is alarming and demands immediate attention and action. Schools must introduce measures to educate and engage students in more productive extracurricular activities. Parents should also keep a close eye on their children’s screen time. Finally, students themselves must develop self-awareness, regulate their behavior, and focus on their studies and personal growth.
As society progresses, people have more entertainment options than ever. So why should we allow gaming to become such a widespread issue? It’s time to address and eliminate this growing trend.

Statistics show a growing connection between criminal activity and online gaming, with younger individuals increasingly involved in illegal behavior. This alarming trend highlights the urgent need for parental guidance and societal awareness about the dangers of online gaming. It's clear that online games are causing significant harm, second only to the drug epidemic.
Online games are interactive experiences played over the internet, allowing players to engage with each other or the game server. The goal of game developers is to attract players, generating profits from downloads or in-game activities.
However, many young players, especially students, become overly immersed in these games, neglecting their studies, family responsibilities, and other aspects of life. Worse still, some may break the law as they lose control. This addiction is particularly troubling, with students becoming more deeply engaged in pointless and unhealthy entertainment.
The consequences of online gaming addiction are severe. Many games are specifically designed to captivate players, often incorporating disturbing elements such as violence, sexualized characters, and horror themes. These features make online gaming a dangerous activity. Popular games like The Elder Scrolls Online, Crossfire, League of Legends, and others are currently dominating the youth culture.
The first danger lies in the personal impact on the player. Addiction to gaming wastes valuable time, money, and health, and can seriously affect mental well-being, work, and even legal matters. Many young players sacrifice sleep, and their mental state becomes consumed with thoughts of the game, leading to severe exhaustion and impaired memory.
The second danger affects families and society. Gaming addiction deteriorates an individual’s character, leading to negative behaviors influenced by the game's characters. Long exposure to these games warps moral values, promoting violence and a distorted worldview. This results in problematic behavior within families and conflicts with others in real life.
Despite the sophisticated nature of these games, overcoming addiction is possible. Focusing on studies and avoiding the temptations of online gaming can help break the cycle. Additionally, cultivating good moral values and recognizing the serious risks posed by these games is crucial. Engaging in sports activities provides an excellent alternative, offering physical and mental benefits while fostering traits like perseverance and self-discipline.
While it's true that some online games can be beneficial for relaxation or even stimulate creativity, many games contain harmful content that darkens the mind, leaving players obsessed with meaningless distractions. Therefore, it's essential to be selective in choosing which games to play and to manage time spent gaming to avoid addiction. Families must also take responsibility by guiding their children to focus on their studies, engage in sports, and educate them about the dangers of gaming. Schools should offer healthier recreational activities that promote learning and well-being. The government should regulate game developers to ensure they do not create harmful content.
The growing epidemic of online gaming addiction among students is a national crisis. If left unaddressed, it will further erode the social fabric, robbing the country of its youth, talent, and future, all for the sake of mindless entertainment.
