Tần Hoài Dạ Vũ once shared: “In the rapid flow of modern society, poetry's place seems to have become somewhat blurred compared to other art forms. Yet, I still believe that beautiful, emotionally rich verses will remain in the hearts of the public, making a small contribution to guiding people toward a more humane life, inspiring them to believe in the good and beautiful things in life.” In literature, this concept is used to describe the images of human characters in works created by the writer, who uses special linguistic and artistic techniques. 'Walking in the Tràm Fragrance' by Hoài Vũ is such a work.
Lê Nhược Thủy once commented: “Tần Hoài Dạ Vũ writes poetry and seems to be like someone carrying the cross, traveling everywhere preaching love in a dedicated and lovable way. With a longing to embrace the fleeting moments of happiness, love in his poems becomes a journey of search, quiet yet poignant.” The collection 'Poems of Tần Hoài Dạ Vũ' offers readers diverse works covering topics like love, philosophy, nostalgia for the past, and homesickness... The love in the author's poems is not just a search, but a powerful desire to embrace happiness. The emotions and voices in this poetry collection reflect changes through different stages, from the fervor and intensity of youth to the calm and sorrowful tone of middle age, while still maintaining a passion for love and beauty, concern for life, reflection, and creativity. 'Walking in the Tràm Fragrance' was inspired by the famous poetry collection of the same name by Hoài Vũ. The poem tells the story of a teacher named Lan, who took care of and left lasting affection in Hoài Vũ's heart when he was suffering from malaria. Upon hearing the news of her passing, a deep sorrow settled in the poet's heart. That night, Hoài Vũ quickly wrote the poem 'Walking in the Tràm Fragrance', without altering a single word.
When reading this poem, one feels as if they are listening to a long, endless conversation. Deep memories and overflowing sadness are connected to the image of the tràm flower, creating a highly emotional literary work. At the beginning of the poem, we encounter the following imagery:
"What have you sent in the wind and clouds?
To bring this morning to Vàm Cỏ Tây?
The tràm flowers shyly bloom beneath the leaves
While everywhere the scent of clouds drifts by!"
From the perception of the surrounding nature, the talented author conveys his personal feelings to the reader through the characters 'he' and 'she'. The one still living, observing the drifting clouds, shares a conversation with the departed about things that only the two could share—the secrets of the soul materialized as the image of 'tràm flowers shyly blooming beneath the leaves'. The tràm flower symbolizes purity and nobility, representing a pure and innocent first love. This flower has a resilient spirit but is not immune to aging. In this very moment, the entire space, time, and even objects are soaked with human longing. This emotion is further captured in the following lines:
"No matter where I go, no matter how far apart we are
Even if the wind and clouds change direction and color
Even if your heart no longer belongs to me
Just one moment of tràm fragrance brings us together again"
Though everything changes, even if we are separated and even if you no longer love me. Even though your heart belongs to another world, invisible and intangible. Although you have taken that love with you to the other side, I believe that through the mysterious power of love, what seems impossible will become possible. I will remain loyal to you no matter what. The tràm scent suddenly drifts by, sweet and as unchanging as our love, serving as proof of the love I have for you and perhaps allowing us to be together once more, don't you think?
"The Tháp Mười wind has blown, blowing deeply
With pain and hope
The sky is so high, the fields are so wide
Tràm fragrance by my side, but where are you?"
The Tháp Mười wind seems to carry the feelings and longing that 'he' has for 'her'. The winds keep blowing, and I feel them passing through my lonely heart. They strike deep, causing an ache in my soul that will never heal. However, within this pain, there is a miraculous force that helps one overcome despair and maintain faith in noble love. Love can transform, uplift, encourage, and motivate a person to live according to their true values. Even when facing harsh truths, sorrow, or loss, love remains a steadfast source of strength that drives a person forward. The images of 'the field' and 'the sky' are powerful and full of life, yet they also make one feel small in the face of nature's vastness. Meanwhile, the tràm fragrance, an invisible aspect of love, can be felt with the heart and soul even though it cannot be seen with the eyes.
"No matter where I go, and no matter how far apart we are
I still see your shadow in the vast tràm grove
I still see your eyes on the cool tràm leaves
I still hear your love in the bustling tràm fragrance"
But transcending all limits of the self, I leave everything behind to honor the eternal love between us. To me, distance will never be too far, and my feelings for you will never change, because now in the tràm grove, your image is ever-present, and I am always by your side, watching over you. All that relates to our love will never fade.
Hoài Vũ has sent his longing and sincere feelings to 'her' through simple yet emotional verses. A love that is abundant, intense, and unchanging no matter what, will always remain. In these heartfelt lines, Hoài Vũ skillfully weaves in unique artistic devices to bring this love to life. His goal is to expand the emotional and spatial scope of his feelings, stating that all things bear witness to this sincere affection. This poem is simple but full of meaning, a prayer for everyone to find a love that is simple yet truly beautiful and faithful.

The image of those deep blue eyes, as if they were the canopy of tràm leaves, continually haunts me. They follow me, lingering with each word and phrase as I read this poem and listen to the music composed for it. The haunting comes from their perpetual clarity—pure in the eyes, heart, mind, and imagination of the passionate and devoted young man. This image appears only at the end of the poem, yet on a second read, it seems to permeate all four verses, which are equally full of passion and devotion. Hoài Vũ subtly wove those eyes into the tràm leaves. Consequently, anything associated with 'you' becomes tràm.
It feels as though tràm has always been 'you'. And the poem is saturated with tràm's fragrance, its leaves, its breeze. Tràm is you, and you exist within tràm. The Tháp Mười region itself transforms into the land of tràm—your land! Consider this:
“I still see your shadow among the vast tràm trees”
“I still see your eyes on the cool tràm leaves”
“I still hear your love in the restless tràm fragrance…”
You are the shadow of tràm. You are the eyes of the tràm leaves. You are the fragrance of tràm. Hence, it’s easy to understand why every verse of the poem contains tràm wind, tràm clouds, tràm fragrance, and tràm leaves… Therefore, “Walking in the tràm fragrance” is akin to walking in your love!
Each of the four verses ends with an entanglement of tràm fragrance, making the entire poem feel immersed in the lively tràm scent. The first verse: “And the fragrance fills the sky and clouds,” the second verse: “A fleeting moment of tràm fragrance brings us together,” the third verse: “Tràm fragrance is with me, but where have you gone?” the fourth verse: “I still hear your love in the restless tràm fragrance.” Each verse captures a unique shade of tràm fragrance, and each verse mirrors a distinct emotional state of the narrator. All of it is enveloped in tràm’s essence, in 'your love.' From the very first verse, the intoxication is palpable:
“The tràm flowers gently nestled in the canopy”
“And the fragrance spreads through the skies and clouds”
Without being intoxicated by the tràm’s fragrance, how could one possibly imagine a whole sky of tràm’s scent emanating from the tràm flower in the leaves? However, this intoxication is merely the beginning of the emotional journey for the narrator. It is the intoxication of the scenery, of the tràm leaves, of the real presence of tràm. In the second verse, the emotions start to shift with the tràm fragrance. After a series of cold and painful “Although’s” comes “A fleeting moment of tràm fragrance brings us together.” From a single tràm flower, the fragrance fills the air, bringing two people together, even though 'you' are not physically there. The metaphor dives deeper into the mind. And as a rule of the soul’s logic, once the heart has touched the depths of the subconscious, after such moments of intoxication, pain inevitably follows. The deeper the intoxication, the more the pain gnaws and twists.
The harsh reality in the line “Tràm fragrance is with me, but where have you gone?” threatens to shatter the dreams and illusions of the tràm realm. But perhaps because of the narrator’s unwavering devotion, this tràm world cannot easily be destroyed.
By the final verse, the emotion reaches its peak:
“I still hear your love in the restless tràm fragrance”
It has become a profound connection! The poem's setting now splits into two clear spaces: One of reality, with tràm trees, tràm flowers, tràm leaves, and 'distance,' 'changing colors,' 'no longer sharing my heart,' and sorrow… The other is a mental space, full of the tràm shadow, tràm fragrance, tràm eyes, tràm clouds, tràm wind, with 'hope,' with 'bringing us together'…
It is precisely because of this mental space that the wind of Tháp Mười—the land of tràm, your land—'blows deeply,' not far or high! The direction of this wind is that of the soul, of longing, of love, of hope… Perhaps it is also because of this second space and the narrator's deep devotion that the shared space of the poem, though dreamy and illusory, shines brightly through each line.

Hoài Vũ skillfully embedded that gaze into the branches of the tràm tree. As a result, everything related to 'you' transformed into tràm. It seemed as though tràm was 'you' all along. The poem is soaked in the fragrance of tràm, the leaves of tràm, and the breeze of tràm. Tràm is you, and you exist within tràm. The region of Tháp Mười has also turned into a land of tràm – your land!
'I still see your shadow amidst the vast tràm trees. I still see your eyes on the cool green tràm leaves. I still hear your love in the rustling tràm breeze…'
You are the tràm shadow. You are the eyes of the tràm leaves. You are the fragrance of tràm. That is why it's easy to understand why each stanza of the poem is filled with tràm wind, tràm clouds, tràm fragrance, and tràm leaves... Therefore, 'Walking in the tràm breeze' is essentially walking in your love! Each stanza of the poem, with the fragrance of tràm wrapping around it, makes it seem as though the entire poem is immersed in the intoxicating tràm scent.
The first stanza: 'And the sky is filled with the scent of tràm.' The second stanza: 'A fleeting scent of tràm brings us together.' The third stanza: 'The tràm scent is with me, but where have you gone?' The fourth stanza: 'I still hear your love in the tràm breeze.' Each stanza carries its own unique fragrance of tràm, and each also reflects the emotional state of the lyrical character, 'I'. All are deeply immersed in the scent of tràm and in 'your love'. From the very first stanza, one is captivated:
'The tràm flowers shyly nestle in the canopy, And the sky is filled with the scent of tràm.'
One cannot truly understand this deep enchantment with the tràm scent unless one feels the atmosphere that evokes such a scene! However, this enchantment is just the beginning of the emotional journey of 'I'.
It’s the enchantment of the scenery, of the tràm leaves, of the tràm shadow in the present reality. In the second stanza, the mood begins to evolve with the tràm fragrance. After a series of harsh 'Although' moments filled with pain, there comes 'A fleeting moment of tràm to bring us together.'
From the tràm flower, one can see a whole sky of tràm fragrance spreading, and even though 'you' are not there, 'we' can still 'be together' through 'a fleeting moment of tràm'. This transition now moves deeper into the realm of the mind. And as a rule of the soul's logic, once we touch the realm of the mind and consciousness, after the initial intoxication comes the pain.
The deeper the intoxication, the stronger the torment and the more it twists and pulls at one's heart. The harsh reality, 'The tràm scent is beside me, but where have you gone?' seems to destroy all the dreamy illusions of the tràm space that existed before. But perhaps because 'I' am too loyal, that tràm space isn't easily shattered.
Then in the final stanza, the emotion: 'I still hear your love in the tràm breeze' becomes a super metaphor!
'The wind of Tháp Mười blows very deep. There is sorrow, there is hope.'
The poetic space here is divided into two distinct realms: One is the realm of reality with tràm trees, tràm flowers, tràm leaves, and 'distance', 'shifting colors', and 'not giving me anymore', and sorrow... The other realm is that of the mind, the subconscious with tràm shadows, tràm fragrance, tràm eyes, tràm clouds, tràm wind, with 'hope', with 'being together'...
It is because of this space that the wind of Tháp Mười – the land of tràm – the land of 'you' blows 'very deep', not high or far! The direction of the wind here symbolizes the soul, the longing, the love, and the hope...
Perhaps it's this second realm and the deep loyalty of 'I' that causes the shared poetic space to come alive, brightly illuminated with every line.
Holding the poem 'Walking in the tràm breeze' by Hoài Vũ, which has been turned into music by composer Thuận Yến, my heart is filled with a longing tune that is both passionate and wistful, yet deeply stirring:
'No matter where I go, no matter how far apart we are.'
'Even if the wind and clouds change their scent and color.'
'Even if your heart no longer belongs to me.'
'A fleeting moment of tràm brings us together.'
Unable to calm my heart as the winter wind blows relentlessly, while spring quietly steps in, lightly settling on the peach and apricot blossoms beginning to bud, I immerse myself in 'Walking in the tràm breeze', with a love that remains forever green, loyal, and pure...
Though I've never been to Tháp Mười, never seen the lush tràm groves, never admired the shy tràm flowers, never experienced the tràm fragrance, Hoài Vũ's poem continues to stir in my heart. Could it be that the fragrance, flowers, and leaves of tràm are deeply tied to the love of the devoted and pure-hearted people of the Southern region?
'The wind of Tháp Mười blows very deep. There is sorrow, there is hope.'
The tràm scent beside me, but where have you gone? This phrase cuts deep into the heart of the lyrical character, endlessly twisting and drilling into the aching longing and deep love of the Southern man. This man stands amidst the vast Tháp Mười, under a high sky, across a wide field, with the endless wind blowing... inside his heart.
Where does the wind of Tháp Mười blow? If it rises to the sky, it is very high. If it blows across the fields, it is vast and expansive. But when it blows deeply, it enters the heart, the soul, the person. The two words 'Blow' in the verse leave a strong impression. It seems that the wind must pause to catch its breath, must draw strength to reach the 'Tháp Mười' of the heart!
The nature around is vast and open, yet it makes one feel overwhelmed. Meanwhile, the person is experiencing an internal storm. What can he rely on to remain strong, and will he even be able to stand firm? All he has is the tràm fragrance, the tràm fragrance, and the memory of a girl who has now vanished like the scent: 'Even if your heart no longer belongs to me, A fleeting moment of tràm brings us together.'
But that 'Being together' is so fragile, unable to conceal the loneliness: 'The tràm scent beside me, but where have you gone?' It seems that the pain could bring him to his knees. But no, the tràm scent, though fleeting, is like a magical charm:
'No matter where I go, no matter how far apart we are.'
'Even if the wind and clouds change their scent and color.'
The distance of space means nothing, nor does the passage of time. Even nature's 'eternal' laws cannot change anything. Moreover, even if hearts cannot meet, a momentary tràm fragrance can bridge the gap across space and time, 'outsmart' nature, and overcome all things to reach eternal love.
The repetition of 'No matter' and the following conditions affirm that love endures forever. Isn't this a challenge, a defiance? Could this be a 'crazy' mood, an attitude of 'singing along'? No, just continue reading the next stanza, and you'll understand:
Your shadow... amidst the tràm shadows
Your eyes... upon the tràm leaves
Your love... within the tràm fragrance
Thus, you and the past memories are inseparable from the tràm forest, having transformed into the tràm tree, forever green, forever growing. This love is immortal. Composer Thuận Yến, who set the poem to music, shared that Hoài Vũ wrote the poem for an elder whose beloved, a liaison officer, had sacrificed her life. Thus, 'Where have you gone?' means that you have sacrificed yourself and merged with the Earth Mother.
'Your heart will no longer belong to me' means you cannot give your heart, not that you've changed your heart. Knowing this detail makes us appreciate even more the loyalty of the Southern man and the deep emotions felt for those who fell for the independence and freedom of the nation.
Composer Thuận Yến set the poem 'Walking in the tràm breeze' to a unique minor scale, with notes that echo the folk songs of the South, making listeners feel as though they are immersed in the vast tràm-scented space.
'Walking in the tràm breeze' sung by NSND Thu Hiền is beloved by listeners. Perhaps Hoài Vũ did not write in too specific or personal a way about the couple, and that's what makes it so beautiful. This way, the poem resonates with so many love stories connected to the fragrances of tràm, lotus, rice, lemon, and grapefruit... the scents of flowers in every corner of Vietnamese countryside.
It is not death, but due to some reason, they couldn't exchange their hearts. Yet, they still keep the scent of the past in their hearts. A fleeting scent, yet enough for a person to live more fully.

The poet Hoai Vu is originally from Quang Ngai. During the years of the resistance against the American invasion, he actively participated in literary activities in the South. His works often caught the attention of many composers, with the most notable being the poem "Walking Through the Fragrance of the Tràm Flower". With its remarkable content and artistic form, this poem left a deep impression on readers.
As the title suggests, the image of the tràm flower spreading its fragrance is present throughout the poem. Each time the lyrical character mentions the "fragrance of the tràm", the image of "you" appears. It can be said that the fragrance of tràm is deeply intertwined with "you", becoming the main symbol of the work.
Reading the poem, it feels like a continuous monologue. This monologue is expressed through the deep yearning of the lyrical character, who refers to himself as "he". Vivid memories and vast sadness, linked to the image of the tràm flower, are evoked. At the beginning, we encounter the scene:
"What have you sent in the wind, in the clouds
That this morning, I came to Vam Co Tay
Tràm flowers shyly in the leaf canopy
And the fragrance fills the sky and clouds!"
The author perceives nature through the senses. From the image of nature, the "he" subtly conveys his private feelings to "you". Beginning with "wind", "clouds", and "tràm flowers" and "leaf canopy", after layers of fresh green leaves, the tràm flowers shyly show their beauty. The flowers carry a pure and pristine charm. As the lyrical character observes the surrounding scenery, they feel a sense of nostalgia. It seems as though their deep-seated emotions have blended with the surrounding environment: "And the fragrance fills the sky and clouds!". Now, the entire space, time, and objects are soaked with the longing of the person. This emotion continues to be portrayed through:
"No matter where you go, no matter how far apart we are
No matter how the wind and clouds change their direction and color
No matter if your heart no longer belongs to me
A fleeting moment of tràm fragrance keeps us together"
The repetition of the word "no matter" at the beginning of the three lines serves as a declaration, a vow of loyalty in love from "he". Despite all changes in the world, despite "you" not being able to give your heart to "him", one thing is certain: their love will endure forever. Once again, the image of "tràm flowers" appears alongside the image of "you". Could it be that the fragrance of tràm represents the bittersweet taste of an unfulfilled love? Could it be that love is enveloped in "a fleeting moment of tràm fragrance"?
Standing alone in this vast world, the lyrical character cannot help but feel heartbroken and lost:
"The wind of Thap Muoi has blown, blowing deeply
There is pain and hope
With different rhythmic breaks of 5/3, 4/3, the slow pace of the poem's voice emphasizes the deep pain within the person. This pain is like the wind, blowing deep, stirring the heart of "he". It turns their love into sorrow, but at the same time, it becomes a source of strength, encouraging them to live up to that love.
The vastness and emptiness of nature continue to be painted by the author through the lines:
"The sky is high, the field is vast
Tràm fragrance is beside me, but where are you?"
"The sky" and "the field" are eternal, representing the vastness of the earth. Facing these two vast spaces, the lyrical character cannot help but feel solitary and desolate. If before, he had the "fragrance of tràm", had "you" by his side, now, he is alone with only the "fragrance of tràm". Like the sky and the field, the fragrance of tràm is still present, but "you" are no longer here. The rhetorical question, "Tràm fragrance is beside me, but where are you?", is both an internal monologue and a heartfelt question directed at "you". In the end, the paradox of presence and absence, of loneliness, has deeply engraved itself in the mind of the lyrical character.
Finally, rising above everything, "he" boldly expresses his emotions:
"No matter where you go, no matter how far apart we are
I still have your shadow, amidst the vast tràm trees
I still see your eyes in the green tràm leaves
I still hear your love in the lively tràm fragrance."
The line "No matter where you go, no matter how far apart we are" is repeated for the second time, emphasizing the steadfast and unyielding love of the lyrical character. Despite time and distance, "he" will always remember "you". The repetition of the phrase "I still" at the beginning of the lines is like a promise, a vow of eternal love. Everything tied to their pure love will remain forever. Now, the image of "you" has transformed into the tràm tree, its leaves, and its fragrance, becoming a plant that remains evergreen and blooms through time. Each time "he" looks at the tràm tree, he will think of "you" and their shared memories. Thus, the love between "he" and "you" is immortal, nothing can break it apart.
With familiar and intimate imagery, clear and simple language, poet Hoai Vu has created a picture of nature where the tràm flower is at the center. Through this, the poet skillfully reveals the deep emotional longing of the lyrical character. Additionally, the effective use of repetition with the words "no matter" and "I still" helps express the emotions and moods of "he".
In just four brief stanzas, "Walking Through the Fragrance of the Tràm Flower" deeply touches many readers. Reading the poem, one can feel the lingering flavor of a love that has been left unfinished, a love that was not fully realized. May the heartfelt verses in the poem continue to shine brightly as time flows on.

With poetic and heartfelt words, Hoai Vu's works have always been transformed into songs, becoming romantic ballads that many are familiar with. Among these, one cannot overlook “Walking in the Fragrance of Tràm” – a poem that has left readers with profound feelings about love between two people.
What did you send through the wind and the clouds?
So this morning, up at Vàm Cỏ Tây
The tràm flowers shyly nestled in the leaves
And all around, the fragrance of the clouds spread!
No matter where I go, no matter how far apart we are
No matter how the wind and clouds change direction and color
No matter if you no longer give me your heart
For a moment, the fragrance of tràm keeps us together
The wind from Tháp Mười has blown, blowing very deep
With sorrow and hope intertwined
The sky is high, the field is wide
The fragrance of tràm by my side, yet where did you go?
No matter where you go, no matter how far apart we are
I still have your shadow in the vast tràm forest
I still see your eyes in the green tràm leaves
I still hear your love in the bustling fragrance of tràm...
In just four short stanzas, Hoai Vu expressed his sincere feelings and promises clearly and emotionally.
What did you send through the wind and the clouds?
So this morning, up at Vàm Cỏ Tây
The tràm flowers shyly nestled in the leaves
And all around, the fragrance of the clouds spread!
The longing for “you” occupies all the space and time around Vàm Cỏ Tây, causing “me” to ask, “What did you send through the wind and the clouds?” so that this morning, “me” could feel the tràm flower fragrance spreading everywhere. The image of “shyly nestled tràm flowers” reflects the shy, hesitant feelings “I” have when meeting “you”.
No matter where I go, no matter how far apart we are
No matter how the wind and clouds change direction and color
No matter if you no longer give me your heart
For a moment, the fragrance of tràm keeps us together
The longing and affection for “you” are affirmed by sincere words, like vows of love between us. The repetition of the word “No matter” four times is a strong statement that no matter where we are, no matter how the world changes, no matter if you stop loving me, my love for you will remain. Clearly, “I” have dedicated special loyalty to “you”, and this love will never change. The image of the tràm flower appears again. Could it be that this love is intertwined with tràm flowers?
The wind from Tháp Mười has blown, blowing very deep
With sorrow and hope intertwined
The sky is high, the field is wide
The fragrance of tràm by my side, yet where did you go?
The wind at Tháp Mười blows strongly, much like the feelings “I” have for “you”, blowing deeply into “my” heart, stirring both sorrow and hope. Around “me” is everything: a sky above and a wide field below, filled with tràm fragrance, yet “you” are not by my side. The question “where did you go?” is one that seems impossible to answer.
No matter where you go, no matter how far apart we are
I still have your shadow in the vast tràm forest
I still see your eyes in the green tràm leaves
I still hear your love in the bustling fragrance of tràm...
The line “No matter where you go, no matter how far apart we are” is repeated once again, answering the question that no matter where “you” go, your presence will always remain in my mind, even in the vast tràm forest. The eyes that I adore will always appear when I look at the cool green tràm leaves. The love “you” have for me, I still feel it, even as the wind in the tràm forest stirs the air.
Not only does the repetition of “No matter” stand out, but the repetition of “I still” also serves as a vow, a promise that the love and longing I have for “you” can never fade away.
Through simple yet emotionally charged language, the author conveys his love and longing to the figure of “you” in the sweetest and most genuine way. This love is witnessed and nurtured by the heavens, the earth, and the endless tràm forest. In the lines full of emotions, Hoai Vu skillfully integrates rhetorical devices that animate this love. By listing the surrounding natural images, the author expands the space and deepens the feelings he has for the person, stating that everything around him witnesses this sincere love. The use of repetition with “No matter” and “I still” shows the genuine promises the author has made to “you”.
In just four short stanzas, Hoai Vu has sent his longing and sincere affection to “you,” using poetry to search for and deliver these emotions to you, wherever you may be. This simple yet enduring love is something we all wish for. Through this poem, may everyone find a person like the figure of “I” and experience such a beautiful love.
