1. The Little Friend with a Big Impact
On a scorching hot day, a tired lion lay resting under the shade of a tree after a long hunt. A little mouse scurried by and, seeing the lion asleep, decided to playfully leap onto its back. The lion woke up in a fury, angered by the disturbance, and grabbed the mouse with its powerful paw, growling:
"How dare you wake me, the king of the jungle? I will crush you with my claws!"
The tiny mouse, trembling with fear, pleaded, "Please spare me, I will never forget your kindness and will repay you one day!"
The lion, amused by the mouse's words, felt a sense of pity and decided to release it. The mouse quickly scurried away, grateful for its life.
Months later, while hunting in the forest, the lion got caught in a hunter's net, unable to break free. The lion roared in desperation, its cries echoing through the jungle.
The mouse, remembering how the lion had spared its life, heard the roar and rushed to help. Upon finding the lion trapped, it said, "Don't worry, I'll help you." The mouse nibbled at the ropes of the net, eventually gnawing through them and freeing the lion. The lion then realized that even the smallest act of kindness can have a lasting impact.

2. Friendship
In a certain garden, there were two grapefruit trees: one was a local variety and the other was a famous variety called 'Diễn'. The Diễn tree bore many fruits, while the local tree had few fruits, and they weren't as sweet. However, the owner cherished both trees. One day, the owner had to leave for a long time, and a fierce storm swept through the garden. The wind howled, and the rain poured heavily. The Diễn tree, unable to withstand the storm, was about to fall, but the local tree braced itself and sheltered the Diễn tree from the storm. It shouted through the wind:
- It's only a few broken branches, don't give up now!
Both trees leaned on each other to weather the storm. Afterward, although they survived, both were damaged, especially the local tree. The owner's grandson, seeing the damage, decided to chop down the local tree to make room for the Diễn tree to grow. The Diễn tree was deeply concerned for its friend and quickly devised a plan. It called on the garden's insects to crawl over both trees so the boy would be too scared to cut them down.
Indeed, when the boy saw the trees covered in insects, he dropped his axe and ran off, waiting for his grandfather's return. When the grandfather returned, the curious boy asked:
- The local tree bears few fruits and they're not even sweet, why don't you cut it down?
The grandfather replied:
- Because this tree was a gift from a dear friend who brought it from the South as a symbol of our long-lasting friendship. Even though the fruits are not sweet, to me, this tree always carries the sweetness of our eternal bond of friendship, just like the memories of the one who gave it to me.

3. What the Bear Whispered to Him
One day, two friends were walking through the forest when they saw a large bear passing by. One friend immediately ran off and climbed a tree to hide.
The other, who couldn’t escape in time, had to face the approaching bear. He lay down on the ground and held his breath, pretending to be dead.
The bear got closer, sniffed his face, but seeing that the man remained still, it eventually walked away without harming him.
When the bear was far enough, the friend in the tree climbed down. He asked his companion, 'What did the bear whisper in your ear?'
The man replied, 'The bear told me: “Never trust someone who leaves you behind in a moment of danger.”'
The other friend, deeply ashamed, apologized for abandoning him and running away. He realized that his friend had been at risk while he hid safely in the tree. True friends must help each other, especially in times of peril.

4. The Light of Friendship
In a small house, there lived a boy and his dog named Lizzi. The boy loved his dog dearly. One day, he noticed that Lizzi was behaving strangely, so he decided to take her to the vet. The diagnosis was retinal degeneration, which meant Lizzi would be permanently blind. After that, Lizzi became depressed and withdrawn. She no longer cared about eating or going for walks with her owner. One day, the boy brought home another dog named Mart. Mart tried to introduce himself to Lizzi, but the blind dog ignored all of his attempts. She barked out:
- I'm just a useless, blind dog. I can't play, I can't walk. Even my owner hates me and brought you home to replace me. You don't have to pretend to care about me!
Mart was deeply saddened by this:
- I am so sorry, I didn't know you were blind. But that doesn't change anything. I still want to be your friend. I'll play with you, and I'll be your eyes.
From that day on, the two dogs became inseparable, enjoying their time together in the house. One day, the boy took Lizzi to visit a friend. When Mart heard about it, he became so sad that he stopped eating and drinking. Eventually, he sneaked out to find his friend. After much searching, Mart found Lizzi, who had also stopped eating because she missed her companion. Touched by their friendship, their owner decided to keep them together. And so, the blind dog followed Mart back to their home, guided by his lead.

5. The Story of Sand and Stone
Two friends were walking through the desert on a long journey. As they conversed, they got into a heated argument over something. Losing their temper, one of them slapped the other across the face. The slap stung, but the other friend said nothing.
Instead, he silently wrote a message in the sand, large enough for all to see:
“TODAY, MY BEST FRIEND SLAPPED ME IN THE FACE.”
They continued their journey and soon came across an oasis, where they decided to rest. The friend who had been slapped accidentally slipped into a muddy pit and began to sink. However, the other quickly pulled him out and saved him.
Once safe, the friend immediately carved a message into a nearby stone:
“TODAY, MY BEST FRIEND SAVED MY LIFE.”
Seeing this, the other friend asked, “Why did you write in the sand when I slapped you, but now you carve it into stone?”
The answer he received was simple: When someone hurts us, we should write it in the sand, where the winds of forgiveness can wash away the hurt. But when someone does something good for us, we should carve it into stone, where no wind can ever erase it.

6. A Heartwarming Breakfast
On a narrow alley across from a university, mornings are always bustling with activity. The alley is lined with breakfast vendors selling various items: rice, noodles, pho, sticky rice, bread, and more. People from different walks of life, with different preferences and budgets, make their choices accordingly.
Every morning, I notice two university students, probably roommates, heading to the alley to buy bread. They attend the university across the street. Dressed in their school uniforms, one holds a bag in one hand and a loaf of bread in the other, as they cross the street, disappearing into the busy traffic.
“Breakfast is the meal of kings…” The TV often reminds us that we should have a good breakfast to fuel ourselves for a hard day's work, study, or labor. I, however, have always been someone who wakes up late, grabs a quick bite, just enough to prevent dizziness or hunger by noon. Breakfast has always been a mere routine for me, done out of habit or just to avoid a lecture from my mom about skipping it.
One morning, I woke up early and casually walked to the alley to buy some bread. The morning air was still fresh, and the sunlight had just begun to touch the leaves, gently like a soft caress.
Again, I saw the two students emerging from the alley. They stopped by the bread stall, and one of them hesitated, saying, “You go ahead and buy it. I’m not eating today.” His friend was surprised: “Why not?” Then, as if remembering something, he exclaimed, “Oh!” With a quick movement, he broke his loaf of bread in half and handed one piece to his friend. “Let’s share it,” he said with a smile. “A tiny grain of salt can be split, so why not a big loaf of bread?” He winked, his smile sincere.
The two students, still in their school uniforms, each holding half a loaf of bread, walked side by side across the street. I watched them with a lingering feeling in my heart. If the student hadn’t split his bread for his friend and had just bought another loaf, perhaps I wouldn’t have been so moved. The warmth in their eyes, the closeness in their smiles, conveyed something deeper. What seemed like a typical breakfast suddenly felt special. I felt as if I had discovered something new that I had never considered before.
It was the same breakfast, but for some, it fills the stomach, and for others, it warms the heart.

7. The Friend
A shop owner hung a sign that read “Puppies for Sale” on the door. Signs like these always attract young customers. Soon, a little boy appeared.
- How much are these puppies? – he asked.
The shopkeeper replied:
- They’re priced between $30 and $50.
The boy reached into his pocket and pulled out some change. “I have $2.37,” he said. “Can I see them?”
The shopkeeper smiled and whistled. Out from the cage came the mother dog, Lady, followed by five little, adorable puppies. One puppy limped out last. Immediately, the boy pointed to the puppy with the crippled leg: “What’s wrong with that puppy?”
The shopkeeper explained that the vet had examined the puppy and found that it had a hip problem. It would always limp and never be able to walk properly. The boy was deeply moved. “I want to buy that puppy,” he said.
The shopkeeper responded:
- You probably don’t want that one. But if you really want it, I’ll give it to you for free.
The boy became upset. He looked the shopkeeper straight in the eyes and said:
- I don’t want you to give it to me. It deserves just as much as any other puppy, and I’ll pay you the full price for it. In fact, I’ll give you $2.37 right now and 50 cents every month until I’ve paid the full amount.
The shopkeeper protested:
- You don’t want that puppy. It will never be able to run or play like the other puppies.
The boy bent down, rolled up his pants leg to reveal a withered leg that was supported by a metal brace. He looked up at the shopkeeper and said quietly:
- Well, I can’t run either, and that little puppy needs a friend who understands it!

8. A Small Kindness, But a Great Meaning
One day, Mark was on his way home from school when he noticed a boy, around his age, ahead of him. The boy dropped his bag, and everything spilled out – books, two sweaters, a pair of gloves, a baseball bat, and a tape recorder.
Mark quickly helped him gather everything. Since they were both heading in the same direction, Mark offered to carry some of the items. As they walked, Mark learned the boy's name was Bill. He was really into video games, struggling in school, and had just broken up with his girlfriend.
As they reached Bill's house first, he invited Mark in for a drink and to watch some TV. That afternoon passed pleasantly with some laughs and heartfelt conversation.
Afterwards, Mark went home, and from then on, they kept meeting – occasionally at school or for lunch. They both graduated from middle school, went to the same high school, and remained friends for many years.
When the long years of high school were nearly over, three weeks before graduation, Bill told Mark he had something important to share. Bill reminded him of the day they first met on the way home from school.
"Have you ever wondered why I was carrying so many things that day?" Bill asked, then quickly answered himself. "That day I had cleaned out my locker because I didn’t want to leave a mess behind for someone else. I had stolen some sleeping pills from my mom, and that was the day I was going to take them on my way home to end my life."
"But after meeting you, talking and laughing with you, I realized that if I had killed myself, I would have missed out on more moments like the one I had with you. So you see, Mark, when you helped me pick up my things that day, you didn’t just help me with my stuff. You saved my life."
