1. Death Isn't the End Mechanism
If you think that once a champion is defeated, the battle is over, you’re severely mistaken. In League of Legends, there are champions who can deal damage even in death, making them incredibly dangerous. The three champions with this chilling ability are Kog'Maw, Karthus, and Sion, the Undead Warrior.
In their past, this trio has struck fear into the hearts of many, charging into battle with the intention of dying. First, there’s Kog'Maw, a marksman who was once used as bait in a brilliant juggernaut strategy. Then there’s Karthus, who was truly feared as a death bringer, charging into the enemy’s midst, dying, but with 7 seconds left to deal massive damage with his Destruction and finishing off the enemy team with his Requiem. Lastly, there’s Sion, a champion known for his massive pushing power and the infamous Feed to Win strategy in the previous season. Despite sharing a similar “resilient” passive, all three have been extremely effective, forcing Riot to nerf them across multiple patches.
2. Yuumi's Cling Mechanism
Not powerful, but incredibly practical and effective, is Yuumi's cling mechanism – a unique support champion in recent Riot patches. As a support champion in the form of a cat with minimal durability, Yuumi possesses a parasitic mechanism, attaching to a host and dealing damage, applying crowd control effects, and healing her host.
Thanks to this ability, Yuumi players can even AFK for a while to handle other tasks. While she cannot be targeted or affected as long as her host is alive, Yuumi is a very vulnerable support if there’s no one to cling to. Furthermore, due to her lack of mobility, Yuumi players rarely buy boots, making her especially susceptible to being closed in on if she lacks a host, even though she has an ability like Zoom to increase her movement speed. Therefore, if you don’t trust a particular host, it’s best to switch your “pet” early on to avoid being dragged into trouble.
3. 1v1 Duel Challenge – Mordekaiser
If you thought Morgana's 2-second root was unbeatable in terms of crowd control, you’re very mistaken. In League of Legends, there is another champion who can trap enemies for 7 seconds in his own kingdom – the mighty Mordekaiser. Recently reworked, Mordekaiser shares the same unique mechanic with champions like Volibear and Akali, thanks to his ultimate.
The Realm of Death allows Mordekaiser to almost completely isolate his target in his own world. Inspired by the ultimate abilities of Jarvan IV’s Cataclysm and others, this mechanic prevents anyone from entering, except for game glitches. Those who know how to master Mordekaiser and who have him fed enough can torment their enemies and send them to their graves in just 7 seconds inside his Realm of Death.

4. This Ultimate is Mine – Sylas
If there were a vote for the strongest ability in League of Legends, Sylas would be almost unbeatable, simply because he has the combined strengths of other champions. As a champion with great expectations from Riot, Sylas is a powerful magic-fighter with a striking design and an incredibly strong skillset. But the most unique feature is his ultimate, Hijack, which allows him to steal other champions’ ultimates, a revolutionary mechanic first introduced in League of Legends.
It’s no surprise that Hijack, along with Sylas, made an immediate impact upon release, quickly becoming an unpredictable force and a dangerous wildcard capable of countering teams with strong ultimates. This one-of-a-kind mechanic elevated Sylas’ profile in major tournaments throughout the past year. While Sylas may not be as strong as before, Riot has kept his Hijack intact. It will likely take a long time before Riot creates a new mechanic strong enough to surpass Hijack in the future.
5. Tower Resistance Mechanism – Volibear
Finally, we have a champion that has been frequently mentioned in recent times, as Riot reworked and unleashed him in version 10.11. With a fresh start, Volibear is quickly becoming a true powerhouse, possessing a versatile skillset that allows him to perform in multiple roles across the map.
However, what makes this champion particularly special is his ultimate, Thunderclap. This ability serves as the second skill to feature the “turn off enemy towers” mechanic, a feature previously tied to the item Ohmwrecker, which was removed from League of Legends. This unique and familiar mechanic delights players, proving especially useful in the early game if his team wants to set up tower dives. Thanks to this innovative new mechanic, Volibear is poised to be a popular pick in the future.

6. Sleep Mechanism – Zoe
Zoe is an exceptionally unique champion in terms of appearance, abilities, and lore. She is the only champion to possess the Sleep mechanic, a highly original effect inspired by crowd control abilities such as slows, roots, and stuns. When enemies are affected by this mechanic, they experience a brief movement phase before falling asleep, and can be awakened if they take damage from any source.
Although Sleep is a tricky mechanic to use, as opponents can wake up if the damage isn't timed right, with a mage like Zoe, a short nap is all she needs. Furthermore, her short delay before sleep allows Zoe to carefully position her abilities to maximize damage and frustration for her opponents. This combination is what makes Zoe one of the most disliked champions, to the point where players have repeatedly asked Riot to remove her from the game throughout her history.

7. Turn Everything to Gold – Bard
Destiny's Embrace is one of the rare abilities with the unique mechanism of disabling enemy turrets. However, beyond just delaying turrets, Bard's ultimate also functions like a time-stopping device, turning everything within its area into gold, including allied turrets.
Despite its uniqueness and numerous uses, Destiny's Embrace is notoriously difficult to execute properly and can easily be wasted. If used correctly, it can be a game-changer, especially in moments like the Baron fight or stalling a fight to tilt it in your favor. Therefore, when you hold Destiny’s Embrace, be sure to carefully plan and calculate your moves if you want to master a champion as unpredictable as Bard!

8. Planting and Harvesting – Ivern
One of the most unconventional champions in League's history, Ivern was introduced by Riot with a unique and seemingly absurd mechanic: a jungler who doesn’t deal damage to jungle monsters. Upon release, Ivern’s abilities were exactly as described, as he possessed a passive that allowed him to "plant and harvest" jungle camps instead of killing them like other champions.
Although this mechanic provides ample time to assist lanes since Ivern doesn’t spend time clearing jungle camps and can easily handle multi-target camps, he remains quite weak in solo duels and can only secure large objectives with team assistance. Thus, in a meta that emphasizes major objectives and combat-heavy gameplay, like the Vietnamese server, Ivern has lost his place and rarely appears in recent patches.
