1. Ensure Your Baby Gets Enough Sleep
In addition to providing your baby with the proper nutrition through regular feedings, it's important to also focus on ensuring your baby’s sleep is well-managed when they have a cough and nasal congestion. At 2 months old, babies typically sleep more than in later months, but when they’re unwell, their sleep is often disrupted due to discomfort.
To support your baby’s sleep, try dimming the lights after feeding and gently patting their back while ensuring the environment is quiet, so they can easily drift off. A peaceful and deep sleep will help your baby feel refreshed and strengthen their immune system, speeding up recovery from illness.

2. Perform Chest Percussion to Clear Mucus
For 2-month-old babies with a productive cough, it's helpful for parents to try chest percussion to help clear the mucus more effectively. According to doctors, here’s how you can do it:
Place your baby face down across your lap and gently cup your hand to tap firmly on their back. This may cause your baby to cry, cough, or even spit up mucus. It's best to do this early in the morning before your baby has eaten for the best results. After the mucus is expelled, use a soft towel soaked in warm water to gently clean your baby's mouth to ensure hygiene.

3. Use Essential Oils in the Nursery
Using an essential oil diffuser helps disperse the oils more effectively throughout the room, with the fragrance reaching every corner. This creates an atmosphere where the soothing aroma helps your baby relax, promoting better sleep while preventing dryness in the nose, reducing nasal congestion, and alleviating coughing.
Recommended essential oils for infants include: eucalyptus oil, lavender oil, peppermint oil, lemon grass oil, and clove oil.
Note: It’s important to choose high-quality essential oils from trusted suppliers, as natural oils are beneficial for health. Avoid synthetic or low-quality fragrances that could be harmful to your baby’s well-being.

4. Massage Eucalyptus Oil on the Chest, Neck, and Feet
A study titled "Eucalyptus Oil: Evaluation of Its Antibacterial Properties and Other Medicinal Characteristics" conducted in 2006 showed that eucalyptus oil has antiseptic, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties. Since sinus inflammation and bacteria are common causes of nasal congestion, eucalyptus oil can be particularly helpful.
To alleviate nasal congestion and ease breathing, parents should apply eucalyptus oil directly on the chest, under the neck, or on the soles of the feet, 5-6 times a day. Eucalyptus oil can also be added to a warm bath by dropping 1-2 drops into the water before bathing your baby.
Although eucalyptus oil is safe for infants, be cautious as your baby’s skin is delicate. Never apply the oil directly to your baby’s skin. Instead, pour the oil into your hands, rub your palms together, and then gently apply it to your baby's body.

5. Steam Inhalation
Just like using saline solution to clean the nose, steam inhalation is another effective and simple method to relieve nasal congestion in children at home. It helps clear the nasal passages, reduces coughing, alleviates chest tightness, and has several benefits in treating laryngitis in young children. Additionally, steam helps to thin out mucus that has formed in the nose, easing its removal.
You can easily perform steam inhalation at home by following these simple steps:
- Step 1: Use the bathroom as the steam room for your baby.
- Step 2: Close the door and run hot water in the bathtub to create steam.
- Step 3: Allow your child to inhale the steam for 10 to 15 minutes.
- Step 4: Once the congestion starts to ease, gently tap your baby's chest. This can be beneficial for their breathing.
Note: Since newborns are still fragile, avoid making the steam too hot or using strong-smelling herbs, which might make it harder for your baby to breathe. Just add 1-2 drops of eucalyptus oil to the tub. This method can be done in the morning and evening before bedtime.

6. Ginger Foot Soak to Relieve Cough in Children
According to traditional medicine, ginger has warming properties that help prevent cold and alleviate joint pain. In addition to being used as a spice in cooking, ginger is known for its medicinal benefits, including its ability to reduce coughing and wheezing in children.
* Instructions:
- Take one small ginger root, clean it, crush it, and place it in a pot. Add 2 liters of water and a pinch of salt, then boil for about 5 minutes. Once the ginger water is warm, use it to gently wash the child’s body, and soak the child's feet in the water until it cools down.
- This can be done daily during the winter months to help prevent coughing and wheezing in children.

7. Clean the Air Around Your Child
According to doctors, the number of two-month-old infants being hospitalized due to cough and nasal congestion increases when the seasons change. This is because, at this time, the humidity levels in the air change suddenly, and a two-month-old's body cannot adjust quickly enough. The baby may suffer from conditions such as coughing, bronchiolitis, nasal congestion, shortness of breath, or wheezing.
Therefore, doctors often advise mothers to clean the air around the baby by regularly cleaning the room and using a humidifier during dry weather. This approach can reduce coughing and nasal congestion, especially at night.
Additionally, it's important to avoid allowing your baby to come into contact with crowded places or household pets to ensure the air around them remains clean. This helps prevent bacteria from entering the baby’s system.

8. Properly Cleaning Your Baby
When your baby has a cough and nasal congestion, they can feel very uncomfortable and may cry more than usual. This is because their nose is blocked by dirt or mucus, making it difficult to breathe. In addition, coughing can make their throat feel dry and sore. One way for parents to relieve this discomfort is by cleaning the baby properly.
You should use a saline solution to clean your baby’s nose. For a two-month-old, this must be done gently and carefully to avoid choking. Place the baby on the bed, slightly tilt their head, and drop 1-2 drops of the saline solution into one nostril. Gently pat the baby to help them cry, which will expel any dirt or mucus. You can use a soft cloth to gently wipe the baby’s nose.
Repeat the process for the other nostril. It is recommended to clean the baby’s nose 1-3 times a day to help them feel more comfortable. When the nasal passages are clear, the mucus in their throat will loosen and help clear their airways, gradually reducing coughing and nasal congestion.

9. Increase Breastfeeding Frequency
Frequent breastfeeding is highly effective in relieving coughing and nasal congestion in two-month-old babies. Breast milk contains antibodies that help the baby’s body fight infections. During the first year of life, breast milk remains the primary source of nutrition for the baby.
Therefore, when your baby has a cough and nasal congestion, mothers should increase the frequency of feedings. Shortening the intervals between feedings helps the baby rehydrate faster and improves their overall well-being. It is also important for mothers to maintain a nutritious diet (with sufficient protein, fats, vitamins, etc.) to ensure the best quality breast milk for the baby.
