Ways to Extend Your Answers in IELTS Speaking Part 1
1. Use adverbs that indicate frequency for your actions

Các trạng từ chỉ mức độ thường xuyên như: Sometimes = Occasionally, Usually = Frequently, Often,…
Example:
Do you enjoy spending time with your family or friends?
Thay vì nói
“I enjoy spending time with my family members.”
Các bạn có thể nói:
Actually it depends. During weekdays, I frequently come back home to stay with my parents and my younger brother after work, but occasionally I dine out with my close friends at weekends.
2. Add emotion to your answers
Bằng cách này chúng ta sẽ dễ dàng khiến câu trả lời của mình trở nên thú vị và gần gũi hơn đấy.
Example: Trong IELTS Speaking Part 1.
What is your favorite food?
Thay vì nói:
“I love eating sushi”
Bạn có thể nói:
“Frankly speaking, I’m not a fussy eater, and I enjoy a wide variety of foods, especially sushi. This is because I am a big fan of Japanese cuisine, and I love the sensation of eating fresh and raw salmon.”
3. Compare with the past
Khi được hỏi về việc bạn có thực hiện hành động đó hay không? Do you watch movies? Can you sing?… để kéo dài câu trả lời của mình, bạn có thể nhắc lại về quá khứ, so sánh với quá khứ, và đề cập về những thay đổi ở hiện tại.
Example:
Do you have a healthy diet?
“To be honest, when I was younger, I used to eat like a horse, but now I make a conscious effort to eat everything in moderation, focusing on vegetables and meat to stay healthy.”
4. Talking about the future

When discussing the future, it's best to use the two structures Will and be going to.
Example:
What kind of accommodation do you live in?
“Well, I have lived with my parents in a three-story house for the past 30 years; however, I plan to move out next year and rent an apartment for myself.”
5. Expressing opposing views
Một phương pháp nữa để kéo dài câu trả lời là sử dụng các cụm từ though, although, even though.
Example:
Do you usually carry a bag when you go out?
“Well, I always carry a large backpack whenever I leave my house because I need to bring various things with me. While it might not look fashionable and neat, I prioritize comfort and convenience.”
6. Providing examples
Providing examples is a quite effective way to make answers more vivid, trustworthy, and understandable. With examples, candidates can naturally present their test part, leading the examiner better. Examples can come from personal experience or any information or content that the candidates know, as long as they relate to the story, theme, or context mentioned in the article.
For example: “Do you get along with your sister?”
Candidates often respond briefly like this: “No, we’re not.” However, if candidates add an illustrative example to further explain why their sibling relationship is not close, it will make the answer more natural and impressive to the examiners.
Candidates can also answer: “No, we’re not into the same things, like when we are both watching TV we always fight about what show to watch.”
Here are some ways to extend answers for the Explanation part of IELTS Speaking Part 1. Candidates can combine multiple methods to make their answers more complete and lively, but should limit the Explanation part to 2-3 sentences.
