Sample Essay (Band 8.0)
The presence of advertisements in today’s world is undeniable, as they have infiltrated almost every aspect of our lives. From my perspective, while the proliferation of advertising alters which aspects or values of life people should prioritize, I do not entirely agree that it exclusively has adverse effects on people’s lifestyles.
Granted, it is factual that advertising molds people’s perception of what should be considered significant. Initially, the inundation of diverse advertisements has fostered a culture where consumerism and materialism are promoted. In essence, the accumulation of material possessions and products takes precedence over other values and experiences, potentially resulting in a superficial pursuit of happiness when individuals are led to believe that their possessions determine their societal worth and value.
Furthermore, some advertisements employ manipulative or deceptive strategies to entice consumers into purchasing products they may not require or that fail to live up to their promises. They can appeal to emotions, create unrealistic desires, and exploit vulnerabilities, prompting individuals to make impulsive and occasionally regrettable decisions.
Nevertheless, compelling arguments exist against the broad assertion that advertising adversely impacts people’s lives. To start, advertising serves as a crucial source of information about products, services, events, and new innovations, enabling consumers to stay informed about market options and providing details to assist in informed decision-making.
Secondly, commercials play a critical role in helping businesses establish and reinforce brand identity. By enhancing visibility of products and services through advertising, companies can target new markets and expand their customer base, both locally and internationally, contributing to long-term business success. Moreover, some forms of advertising provide a platform to highlight social issues and raise awareness through public campaigns.
In conclusion, while it is understandable why the advertising industry influences what people consider important, I believe that advertising also brings numerous benefits to consumers, businesses, and society at large.
