Example
You are required to:
- What it was
- Who invented it
- When it was invented
And elaborate on its transformative effect on society
When it comes to revolutionary technology, I often think of recent ones that I have been personally affected by. So, I’m going to talk about the Internet because I still remember the time that I didn’t have instant access to it.
I’m not versed enough about how it works to describe it technically. All I knew was that my mum paid for an Internet provider, and they came to our house to set up a router and some cables. After that, we could use our computers to browse the websites.
Exploring the internet for the first time brought me immense joy with its vast array of services and activities. Watching videos and listening to music on platforms like Youtube became a cherished part of my childhood. Like many others, I created social media profiles to stay connected with friends. Before this, I had to ask my mom for permission to use the landline, which was quite inconvenient.
Fast forward to today, during the recent covid-19 pandemic, the Internet really prove its importance. At a time when people had to literally keep their distance. The Internet served at the tool by which people used to spread news and government issued important statements online as well. Many activities such as teaching and learning, and meetings were held online on video conference calls, and this helped life to go on and kept the economy alive.
I think it’s safe to say that the Internet has become an integral part of our lives.
- Revolutionary (adj): mang tính cách mạng
- Instant access (n): sự truy cập nhanh chóng
- To set up (phrasal v): cài đặt
- Browse (v): khi nói về internet, từ browse the nghĩa là truy cập

- To issue (v): ban hành
Describe an invention that has transformed people's lives. If it's an object that's hard to describe visually, focus more on its functionality. How do people use it? When? Where? Make sure to relate it to your own experiences.
An important detail is to clearly explain why it has changed people's lives, possibly comparing past and present scenarios.
IELTS Speaking Part 3
IELTS Speaking part 3: Life and technology
Illustrative Example
1. How can technology simplify our lives?
We can see the influence of technology in many aspects of our lives. First, the application of machines in agriculture has undoubtedly increased crop yield in many places. This means humanity can have better food security and many poor countries can produce food for a cheaper price. In terms of education, many years ago, we didn’t use to have video conferences so online classes were virtually impossible. Now people can attend classes whose lecturers could be in another country. This is a game changer for students who are physically impaired.
- Undoubtedly (adv): không nghi ngờ gì
- Yield (n): năng suất
- Food security (n): an ninh lương thực (có đủ thức ăn)
- Video conference (n): cuộc họp qua video.
- Virtually (adj): hầu hết

→ Discuss the applications of technology and its positive impacts on human life. Consider aspects such as economy, society, health, environment, etc.
2. What are the reasons for limiting the use of mobile phones in public places?
First and foremost, it is for our safety. In many places, cellphones are valuable objects which could invite theft. Therefore, waving your phone in public places can be a bad idea. Second, I think we should refrain from using our phones and be mindful of our surroundings. This is coming from personal experience as I have bumped into others and signs more times than I want to admit.
- Foremost (adv): trước hết (nhằm chỉ tầm quan trọng)
- Refrain from v-ing: hạn chế/kiềm chế làm gì đó
- To be mindful: để tâm/chú ý
- Sign (n): biển báo, tấm bảng
→ List reasons for restricting phone usage in public spaces. Elaborate with personal insights, examples, etc.
3. How can children be encouraged to develop innovation?
Well, I think most children are naturally curious individuals. Each of them can interpret the world around them in a different way through their own personal experience which could lead to innovative thinking. So, instead of trying to teach them to think in certain ways, we can encourage them to embrace their individuality and innovative thinking will follow.
- Curious (adj): ham học hỏi, tò mò
- To embrace (v): có thể hiểu như xem trọng.
- Individuality (n): tính cá nhân, độc lập
→ Propose measures that can help children become 'creative and innovative'.
4. What role should governments play in promoting innovative breakthroughs?
First and most practically, the state should ensure that scientists and engineers throughout the country have appropriate facilities and resources to allow them to come up with innovations. Second, there should be educational programmes provided by the government where children could participate in, for free, that teach them how to think innovatively.
- Practically (adv): một cách thực tế
- Facility (n): cơ sở vật chất
