The report illustrates how different geographical regions worldwide were affected by major causes of global land degradation during the 1990s, while the pie chart ranks these factors by significance during the same period.
Broadly speaking, the primary reasons for agricultural land degradation on a global scale included excessive cultivation, overgrazing, and deforestation. Additionally, Europe experienced a significantly higher proportion of degraded land compared to Oceania and North America.
The predominant cause of global land degradation during the 1990s was overgrazing, accounting for more than one-third of degraded land worldwide. Another 30% and 28%, respectively, resulted from excessive cultivation and deforestation.
In the 1990s, Europe had the highest proportion of degraded land among the three regions, at nearly 25%. However, deforestation, which affected 9.8% of its land, was the primary contributing factor rather than overgrazing. Oceania, with 13% of its land degraded overall and 11.3% due to overgrazing, stood as the second most affected region. Notably, Oceania did not face issues of over-cultivation. In contrast, only 5% of North American land was completely degraded, primarily due to overcultivation, which affected 3.3% of its area.

To begin with, the development of a country may profit greatly from the timber industry. Nevertheless, each nation’s government must enact stringent logging rules to prevent the exploitation of wood in order to promote sustainable growth and preserve the ecosystems and biodiversity. To increase adherence to forest protection rules, harsher penalties should be applied for unauthorised logging and forest devastation.
In terms of society, substantial education about the value of forests is required, along with public awareness-raising initiatives for environmental issues.
