In a recent press interview, Jennifer was questioned about one of her most iconic viral moments of all time just ahead of the film's debut.

At the 2011 American Music Awards, Jennifer Lopez claimed the title of Favorite Latin Artist, surpassing Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull. She delivered a heartfelt speech expressing her gratitude to all who contributed to her success.

Her victory is especially memorable due to her emotional closing words. 'I don't know what to say,' she shared, before lifting the award high and exclaiming, 'MI GENTE LATINO.'

A highlight of the moment for me was when the camera quickly shifted to Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez, who were clearly celebrating J.Lo’s victory. Taylor leaned in and jokingly asked, “She speaks Spanish?” which made Selena burst into laughter.

For those who aren't fluent in Spanish, Jennifer was thanking her community — specifically her 'Latino people.' However, the grammatically correct way to phrase it would have been: 'Mi gente Latina.'

Though it was a simple human mistake, easily understandable in the rush of the moment, the phrase 'Mi gente Latino' spread like wildfire across the world. It went viral and even found its way back to TikTok as a trending sound more than a decade later.

The phrase has been referenced repeatedly online, and in 2024, Grammy-winning artist Kali Uchis even mentioned the meme during her acceptance speech for a Billboard Latin Music Award. Truly, its cultural impact has been undeniable.
Nearly 14 years later, J.Lo now grasps the true significance behind why this phrase became so iconic.

During a recent interview, reporter Javi Ponzo asked if he could share the line with Jennifer before his segment wrapped up. However, Jennifer quickly interrupted, saying, 'OK, can you explain to me why that's funny?'

The interviewer quickly disagreed, asserting that everyone loved it. 'I thought they were mocking me!' Jennifer laughed.

Javi Ponzo, via YouTube, immediately corrected, saying, "No, no, no! It’s like an icon today," as seen on youtube.com.
J.Lo finally understood when the interviewer said, ‘Mi gente Latina,’ but you used ‘mi gente Latino.’ Jennifer exclaimed, ‘Ah, that’s why it’s funny!’

Javi Ponzo clarified once more through YouTube, but there was no additional code or element added this time.
Jennifer, realizing her mistake, explained that during her speech she had been trying to remember whether 'gente' was masculine or feminine. Anyone who speaks a gendered language can relate to this.

Javi Ponzo, via YouTube, shared his thoughts on youtube.com, but there were no extra elements in the text.
Looking at the camera, Jennifer said, "We know it’s ‘mi gente Latina,’ but in the heat of the moment, I said ‘mi gente Latino.’"

Ethan Miller, from Getty Images, captured Jennifer as she said, “I messed it up during an award show once, and they never let me live it down.”
J.Lo, ever the good sport, concluded the interview with a passionate "MI GENTE LATINO," and somehow, it healed something deep inside me.

Javi Ponzo, via YouTube, shared the video on youtube.com, with no additional elements in the post.
