Currently, Apple Music uses the AAC file format. Thanks to its superior characteristics, this format has become a replacement for the outdated mp3 format. However, it is still a lossy format, or commonly known as compressed music files without data preservation. Therefore, compared to lossless or hi-res files, the amount of information in songs in this format is significantly reduced. Apple's decision to upgrade the quality of its service to Lossless will undoubtedly provide a better listening experience.

Lossless (CD-quality) comes in two types: Uncompressed (Wav and AIFF) and Compressed (various formats like APE, FLAC, etc.). Uncompressed files typically have a larger size than Compressed files, making them less common. Usually, lossless files have a size that is 5-6 times larger than lossy files. Hence, streaming and storing such music files require more resources.
