Well, you’ll almost always find me with my camera or phone on standby. I’m an avid photographer and I take pictures very regularly – almost daily. I’m particularly drawn to street photography, and fortunately, in Hanoi, there are numerous captivating scenes to explore. From the picturesque rice fields in the outskirts to the bustling streets of the city center, there’s a plethora of opportunities to capture remarkable images.

I take pleasure in capturing photos in diverse settings. Yet, I hold a special appreciation for photography during our traditional festivals, such as Tet or the Mid-Autumn Festival. The vibrant decorations, traditional attire, and the festive spirits of people offer a distinct chance to preserve the core of our culture. During quieter times, I also relish taking photos of the ordinary moments – the lively markets, peaceful temples, or serene landscapes.

It’s truly a challenging question, no doubt. On one side, I take pleasure in photographing individuals, capturing their genuine emotions and moments in time. On the flip side, I find great satisfaction in preserving the beauty of natural landscapes.

Vietnam is graced with awe-inspiring natural scenery, from the magnificent karsts of Halong Bay to the lush terraced fields of Sapa. So, if I had to make a choice, I might lean slightly towards photographing landscapes, as it evokes a sense of serenity and tranquility that’s truly indescribable.

While I admire the skills of other photographers and relish being a part of their photos, there’s something truly special about being the one behind the camera, pressing the shutter button. It’s akin to creating my own canvas – shaping the composition, fine-tuning the lighting, and freezing the precise moment I desire. This creative process is something I genuinely savor.

1.6. How do you store your photographs?

In this digital era, I primarily store the majority of my photos online, utilizing cloud services. This practice facilitates effortless sharing with friends and family while also guaranteeing the safety and security of my cherished memories. Nonetheless, originating from a culture that places value on tangible mementos of our history, I also derive pleasure from having some of my most treasured photos physically printed.

I maintain several photo albums at home, which provide a source of delight when perused during family gatherings. Furthermore, I relish incorporating my photos as a form of decoration. A wall in my room is dedicated to a collage of my finest shots, serving as a daily visual reminder of the beauty that envelops us.

Describe a photograph of yourself that you cherish. 

You should say:  

• Where it was taken  
• When it was taken  
• Who took it
• And explain why you like it.

Example

I’m going to talk about an old photo of my brother and me which brings back a lot of good memories. The other day, I was going through my old personal belongings and when I opened a notebook, it fell off. I immediately recognized it.

In the photo, my brother and I were at my grandparents’ house in a rural area in Hue which was in central Vietnam. We stood on the front porch and in front of the main door to the house. It was around Tet holiday so there was calligraphy written on red sheets of paper on both sides of the door.

There was nobody else but the two of us in the photo. While my arm wrapped around his shoulders, his arm wrapped around my hip. The reason was that I was a head taller than he was. I vaguely remember my father saying “Smile!” to us before clicking the button on the camera. It was a simple image but it was such a beautiful moment.

I’ve come to treasure this picture since it reminds me of how powerful time can be. More than 15 years have passed since then and my grandparents have passed away so we don’t visit my grandparents’ house as much as we used to do.

My younger brother has also grown into a young man and he’s now actually taller than me. We don’t spend as much time together as we used to during the time that photograph was taken. However, perhaps I should start spending more time with him again. Who knows what the next 15 years will bring?

3.1. What motivates people to capture photographs?  

There are several reasons why people produce photographs. Most people want to preserve the important memories in their lives such as weddings, birthdays or even funerals of loved ones. I think there are times that we need to be reminded of these precious memories, either to reflect upon our progress in life or to find motivation to keep on trying and make ourselves better.

3.2. Why is photography significant in today’s society? 

Well, the obvious answer is that photographs are an important communication tool for our civilisations. In a world where language barriers are yet to be overcome, pictures are the common language that everyone can understand. If you try to explain to a child in Africa what life in Vietnam looks like, they might not be able to grasp the idea.

But give them a picture of a busy street in any Vietnam’s city, they immediately acquire some understanding about Vietnam and its culture. I think this is the same idea that photographers and photojournalists try to follow. They try to tell stories to as many people as possible not by words but by photography.

3.3. Do you believe paper photographs hold more value than digital ones? Why?

No, I don’t think so and I’m not talking about the costs that are involved in making different types of photos. Many people think that physical objects like printed photos have more sentimental value because we can touch them, keep them and hand them to others to share.

On the other hand, I think that the stories behind each photograph are more important. If a printed photo doesn’t have a story that I could relate to, it is to me a useless piece of paper. On the other hand, when I look at digital versions of famous historical photos, I’m still touched and moved like I’m there in person.

3.4. Are more photographs taken now compared to the past?

Yes, I do believe that people take more photos now than in the past. The widespread availability of smartphones with high-quality cameras has made it incredibly convenient for individuals to capture moments and experiences. Social media platforms also play a significant role in encouraging people to take photos to share with their friends and followers.

In the past, when cameras were not as accessible, people had to be more selective in their photography, and there was also the cost associated with film and developing photos, which acted as a natural constraint on the number of pictures taken. Nowadays, with the ease of digital photography and the desire to document our lives, people tend to capture a multitude of moments.

3.5. Why do some individuals enjoy documenting important events through photographs?

Many people like to record important things with photos because of several reasons. Firstly, photos serve as a visual and tangible representation of memories, allowing individuals to revisit and relive special moments in their lives. This can evoke emotions and nostalgia, which can be comforting and enjoyable.

Secondly, photographs serve as a means to share experiences and events with others. In this era of social media, it has become common to share photos with friends and family, thereby maintaining connection even when physically distant.

Moreover, photos can serve as a form of documentation. Important events, such as family gatherings, weddings, or vacations, can be captured to create a historical record of one’s life and experiences. It’s a way to preserve the past for future generations and to leave a visual legacy.

Lastly, photos are frequently used to narrate stories and convey information in a more engaging and accessible manner. They can enhance messages in presentations, reports, or personal storytelling, making them more relatable.

Therefore, capturing photos of significant events enables individuals to preserve memories, share experiences, document their lives, and communicate in a visually compelling manner.
