IELTS Speaking Part 2 Sample Describe an advertisement you remember well
Okay, I’ll talk about a memorable commercial that I recall clearly despite the fact that it aired a long time ago. The fabric softener Comfort, manufactured by the Unilever corporation, is the subject of the advertising.
I honestly don’t remember where I saw this advertisement at first. TV commercials were at their height a few years ago, if I recall correctly. The commercial is so memorable that I occasionally still look it up on YouTube to demonstrate to my students what an effective advertisement looks like.
This advertisement’s poignant message is what I find most intriguing. Unilever paid attention to the content and developed a story about Lily, a devoted housewife, and Andy, a well-known rock musician, while other advertisements at the time tended to be brief and focused on humor to attract people. Despite his popularity and fortune, Andy never loses sight of his loved ones since he can always sense Comfort’s affection by smelling her long-lasting freshness. To further convey the idea, the corporation even produced a series of advertisements rather than just one. Comfort quickly became a household name as a result of this marketing, thus I believe this was an expensive but successful tactic.

1. What makes an advertisement effective?
My belief is that the capacity to make an impression on the audience without resorting to shocking imagery or speech makes an advertisement effective. Because of how easy it is to use the products and how many different ways there are to demonstrate their effectiveness, advertisements for cleaning products frequently succeed in doing this.
- Make an impression (v): tạo ấn tượng
- Resorting to shocking imagery: sử dụng hình ảnh gây sốc
- Succeed in (v): thành công trong
2. What is the purpose of advertising?
I formerly believed that advertising helped increase product sales. It has always operated that way naturally throughout the history of advertising, don’t you think? However, I believe there has been a new trend toward creating advertisements that not only emphasize social reasons and challenges in the society, but also aim to increase sales. That thought has been on my mind ever since I saw a gender equality advertisement.
- Formerly (adv): trước kia
- Operate (v): vận hành
- Emphasize (v): nhấn mạnh
- Gender equality (n): bình đẳng giới
3. How have advertisements changed since you were a child?
The involvement of celebrities is one of the changes that really grabs my attention. Few public people appeared in advertisements in the past, but today’s ad makers frequently use celebrity endorsement. An effective strategy to take advantage of the newest viral trends is to feature renowned people in your campaign, particularly those who are rising stars. Second, ad producers now are more qualified than they were in the past. That is evident in the creative graphics and computer-generated visuals used in modern commercial videos.
- Grab sb’s attention (v): thu hút sự chú ý
- Celebrity endorsement (n): sự chứng thực của người nổi tiếng
- Take advantage of (v): tận dụng
- Renowned people: người nổi tiếng
- Creative graphics: đồ họa sáng tạo
- Computer-generated visuals: hình ảnh do máy tính tạo ra
4. Why do some people dislike advertisements?
There are certainly a few causes, but I believe the primary one is that there are simply too many advertisements. Imagine how unpleasant it is to have your favorite TV show interrupted and forced to sit through 15 minutes of commercials. Additionally, a lot of movie plots are influenced by advertising and must feature the sponsors’ goods, which frequently makes the plot seem forced and unrealistic.
- Interrupt (v): gián đoạn
- Forced (adj): bị ép
- Unrealistic (adj): không thực
5. Do people usually make purchases after seeing advertisements?
Yes, I do think so. If not, businesses would stop investing so much money on advertising. Since advertisements frequently misrepresent how effective a product is, they frequently have a significant impact on consumers’ purchasing decisions. As seen in several marketing for electronic devices, businesses frequently feature the sexiest, most alluring offers and promos in their advertisements.
- Invest (v): đầu tư
- Misrepresent (v): xuyên tạc
- Alluring (adj): lôi cuốn
- Offers and promos (n): cung cấp và khuyến mãi
6. Are people more influenced by TV ads or internet ads?
It might vary. Young people could be more influenced by YouTube ads or pop-ups on different websites as they spend more time online. For older consumers, TV commercials do hold a slight edge. Moreover, unlike YouTube ads, TV commercials cannot be skipped, which is another advantage.- Pop-up ads (n): quảng cáo ăn theo
