One of the places that comes to mind when discussing pollution is Hanoi. I traveled to Hanoi in late 2015 for business and stayed there for a few months during the winter. It's definitely a beautiful city but my experience could have been better, largely due to the pollution I encountered.
On my first morning in the city, I stepped outside and encountered a strange haze that blanketed the sky in grey. The entire day felt gloomy because of it, and later I realized this was not an isolated occurrence. There were days when the weather seemed sunny on the ground, with sunlight visible on the streets, yet the haze completely obscured the sun from above. However, I don't think many people fully grasped the seriousness of this situation.
The primary mode of transport in Hanoi is motorcycles, likely contributing significantly to the city's pollution. I often traveled by motorcycle and was advised to wear a mask to shield myself from the dust and particles in the air. Despite wearing a mask, I could still perceive the distinct odor of exhaust fumes emitted by the many motorcycles.
Another striking observation was the river near my accommodation. The water appeared as a dark, thick sludge; it was so dark that I initially mistook it for a sewage line. Locals informed me it was actually a river that had become polluted. It's remarkable how resilient people are in tolerating such levels of pollution. Perhaps if I had stayed longer, I too would have adapted to it.
