I don’t think this is an easy question to answer, as I have become so accustomed to my neighborhood that I can hardly pinpoint any particularly negative aspect about it. If I had to choose, I might suggest to the authorities to plant more trees in our neighborhood.

To begin with, let me briefly introduce my neighborhood. I reside in Tay Ho district, which is arguably one of the most visually stunning areas in Hanoi. It is perfect for sightseeing, as West Lake, from which the district derives its name, offers a scenic view of the skyline, especially during sunset.

Tay Ho is also renowned for its rich cultural heritage accumulated over centuries, evidenced by various historical relics and traditional craft villages. Moreover, almost all daily necessities are within easy walking distance. This makes Tay Ho a Mecca for both tourists and locals alike.

So, what’s the issue here and why do I believe more trees could help? To put it simply, there is a noticeable lack of trees in the vicinity around our home. While this doesn’t pose major difficulties in winter, the long summer days in Hanoi become quite unbearable due to the lack of shade. Travelling around often feels like being a piece of meat on a BBQ grill, and I genuinely believe that some trees could alleviate this discomfort, if not entirely eliminate it.

However, trees are not just natural air-conditioners; they offer numerous environmental and health benefits as well. By absorbing carbon dioxide, trees help mitigate the greenhouse effect, thereby slowing down climate change. In addition to being environmentally friendly, urban greenery produces oxygen and filters airborne pollutants, thereby improving respiratory health within our community.

Moreover, living in a greener environment has been linked to increased happiness and cognitive development among residents, thanks to greater exposure to nature and reduced exposure to pollution, noise, and heat.

In essence, trees are a real blessing, and I fail to understand why the government does not allocate more space for greenery in our neighborhood. Opening more parks or simply planting lines of trees along streets could significantly enhance people’s lives and make our district an even more attractive place to settle in the future.
