B. Câu trả lời mẫu cho chủ đề Thời tiết trong IELTS Speaking
1. What’s the climate like in your country?
Sample 1: Well, as you could probably tell, I’m currently residing in Vietnam, which is a tropical country. When it comes to the weather here, for the most part, it’s kinda scorching hot and humid year-round. I mean, there have been reports about the heatwaves of over 40 degrees celsius in Hanoi in the recent years during summer. In winter, it used to be frigid but now it’s a bit more pleasant and bearable. And I guess it’s due to global warming.
Sample 2: Well, I live in Saigon, where it’s hot and humid all year round. It is often said that there are only two seasons here: the rainy season and the dry season.
- Humid (adj) ẩm ướt; (of air and weather conditions) containing extremely small drops of water in the air
2. How does the weather influence your activities?
Sample 1: Absolutely. I mean, when the weather is unfavourable like when it’s too sunny, I tend to procrastinate my plan until late afternoon. 5 or 6 pm, because that’s when the temperature lowers a little bit. On the other hand, when it rains heavily for too long, I’m kinda reluctant to drive so I think I would just get a Grab to get around.
Sample 2: Oh yeah, definitely! In Saigon, most of us get around on bikes, so when it’s pouring rain, we prefer to stay indoors. Riding a motorbike in the rain is basically asking for trouble. On top of that, between 11 am and 4 pm, it’s scorching hot outside. I’d sweat buckets in less than five minutes if I dared to step out into the blazing sun. So, if I see rain on the horizon or temperatures soaring above 35 degrees Celsius, you bet I’ll cancel my plans.
- Asking for trouble (idiom) gây rắc rối; behaving in a way that is likely to cause problems for you
- Scorching hot (adj) rất nóng; very hot
- On the horizon (idiom) sắp xảy ra; likely to happen or exist soon
3. Which season do you prefer?
Sample 1: Well, I gotta say it’s definitely autumn. I mean Hanoi possesses 4 distinct seasons in a year. In summery months, it’s usually sweltering and stuffy and I’m sure you cannot make it through the summer without an air conditioner. Winter is too cold and it rains a lot in spring. So hands-down, autumn is my go-to season.
Sample 2: Well, you see, we don’t have a proper fall or spring here. It’s just hot or rainy most of the time. But if I had to pick, I’d say I’m most comfortable around Christmas. The weather cools down a bit, and the sun doesn’t roast us every day. Unfortunately, that heavenly weather only lasts for about two weeks each year.
- Roast (v) [figurative] nướng; to cook food in an oven or over a fire
4. What is the climate like in your area?
I come from a mountainous region, so the weather there is consistently mild throughout the year, neither too hot nor too cold, which is perfect for someone who enjoys spending time outdoors.
- Mild (adj): dịu nhẹ, ôn hòa
- Outdoorsy person (n) người thích ở, hoạt động ngoài trời
5. Do you regularly check the weather forecast?
Example 1: Not really, I only check it when I have special plans. Besides, the weather in Vietnam is quite predictable, so I don't feel the need to check it all the time.
Example 2: To be honest, I don’t check the weather much these days because it’s quite predictable here in Saigon. I always carry a raincoat and an umbrella with me, just in case. However, when I lived in Melbourne, it was a different story. The weather there could change drastically! In the morning, it could be sunny and pleasant at 20 degrees Celsius, but by 3 pm, it could shoot up to 40 degrees and drop to 10 by sunset. Back then, I always checked the weather forecast on my phone before going out, to dress appropriately and decide whether to drive or take public transport.
- Make a point of doing something (idiom) luôn nhớ làm một việc gì đó; to always do something or to take particular care to do something
- Head out (phrasal verb) ra ngoài; go out
6. What do you think about the impact of climate change in recent years?
Example 1: I believe global warming has many negative impacts not only on humans but also on other species. Various species are at risk of extinction due to climate change-related issues such as forest fires, extreme weather events, and diseases. Changes in global surface temperatures can also worsen water shortages in already water-stressed regions, putting many people at risk of chronic water scarcity.
- Adverse effect (n) tác động xấu
- Be at risk of becoming extinct: có nguy cơ tuyệt chủng
- Exacerbate (v) làm tệ hơn, làm xấu đi
- Water shortage (n) thiếu nước
Example 2: There is overwhelming evidence of climate change in recent years. I've read about iconic cities like Venice and Jakarta sinking due to rising sea levels caused by melting glaciers. It's not just cities; the ripple effects of global warming also include loss of habitats, pushing several species closer to extinction. Here in Saigon, it's clear that the rainy season starts earlier and lasts longer compared to 20 years ago, and summers have never been hotter!
- Sea level (n) mực nước biển; the average height of the sea where it meets the land
- Glacier (n) sông băng; a large mass of ice that moves slowly
- Habitat loss (n) sự mất môi trường sống; the reduction in the amount of space where a particular species, or group of species can survive and reproduce.
- Brink (n) bờ vực; the edge, border, or verge of a cliff
7. Would you like to explore other cities with diverse climates from your hometown?
Sample 1: Certainly, it would be fantastic to experience various climates in different locations. While I feel fortunate to have enjoyed four distinct seasons in Hanoi, I desire to encounter more unique weather patterns elsewhere.
- novel experiences (n) những trải nghiệm mới
Sample 2: Definitely. I would love to visit a city where the weather is cool and pleasant throughout the year. Imagine being able to go out anytime without worrying about the climate. That would be incredible!
