Cách thức của thì quá khứ tiếp diễn

Dạng xác nhận

Ví dụ:

• I/he/she/it was watching…

• You/we/they were watching…

Dạng phủ định

Ví dụ:

• I/he/she/it was not (wasn’t) watching…

• You/we/they were not (weren’t) watching…

Câu hỏi

Ví dụ:

• Was I/he/she/it watching?

• Were you/we/they watching?

Bên cạnh đó, còn có dạng câu hỏi mở rộng như:

Ví dụ: What was he/she/it watching..?

Phương pháp sử dụng thì quá khứ tiếp diễn

Thì quá khứ tiếp diễn có 3 cách dùng đặc trưng, độc giả nên nắm rõ những cách dùng dưới đây để biết được khi nào nên dùng thì này.

Cách dùng 1: Hành động, sự việc diễn ra tại một thời điểm trong quá khứ

Ví dụ: I was having lunch with my colleague at 12 o’clock yesterday. (Tôi đã ăn trưa với đồng nghiệp của tôi vào 12 giờ hôm qua)

‘Một thời điểm’ ở đây chỉ những mốc thời gian xác định và chi tiết.

Cách dùng 2: Diễn tả hai hành động, sự việc đã diễn ra vào cùng một thời điểm

Ví dụ: I was watching entertainment on TV while my mother was cooking in the kitchen. (Tôi đang xem chương trình giải trí trên TV trong khi mẹ tôi đang nấu ăn trong bếp)

Cách dùng này có thể dùng ‘while’ hoặc ‘and’ để thay thế cho nhau.

Cách dùng 3: Diễn tả một hành động đang diễn ra thì có một hành hành động, sự việc khác xen vào (Diễn tả bối cảnh khi câu chuyện, sự việc đó đang diễn ra), hoặc dùng để nhấn mạnh sự kéo dài trong 1 đoạn thời gian trong quá khứ của 1 hành động, sự việc.

Ví dụ:

• She was doing the laundry when I called her. (Cô ấy đang giặt đồ khi tôi gọi cô ấy)

• It was raining so I decided not to hang out with my friends. (Trời mưa nên tôi quyết định không đi chơi với bạn tôi nữa)

Ta chia thì quá khứ tiếp diễn cho hành động đang diễn ra còn chia thì quá khứ đơn cho hành động đột ngột xen vào.

Chú ý: Không dùng thì quá khứ tiếp diễn cho hành động diễn ra thường xuyên hay có tính lặp lại trong quá khứ. Đối với những trường hợp này, người học sử dụng thì quá khứ đơn.

Dấu hiệu nhận biết thì quá khứ tiếp diễn

Người đọc có thể dễ dàng nhận ra một câu nói có đang dùng thì quá khứ tiếp diễn hay không khi trong trong câu đó có những từ ngữ, cụm từ sau:

• at that moment/time (He was studying for the exam at that moment)

• at two/three/etc o’clock (It was raining heavily at ten o’clock last night)

• while/when/during (I was washing the dishes while my sister was mopping the floor)
