1. Tóm tắt kiến thức về thì quá khứ tiếp diễn sử dụng when và while

Thì quá khứ tiếp diễn được dùng để diễn tả hành động diễn tả một hành động đang diễn ra tại một thời điểm xác định trong quá khứ. Vậy khi trong câu có xuất hiện when và why thì chúng ta nên chia các thì ở các vế câu như thế nào? Hãy cùng nhìn lại qua bảng tổng hợp dưới đây nhé.

*Lưu ý: Điểm khác nhau khi dùng when và while khi dùng thì quá khứ tiếp diễn là: dùng when chỉ hành động đang diễn ra trong thời gian ngắn (thì quá khứ tiếp diễn) thì hành động khác (thì quá khứ) chen vào, dùng while khi chỉ hành động đang diễn ra trong thời gian dài (thì quá khứ tiếp diễn) thì hành động khác (thì quá khứ) chen vào.

E.g.:

• When I was playing with my daughter, my mom came home.
• While I was playing with my daughter, my mom came home.

→Hai ví dụ trên đều ngụ ý là khi tôi đang chơi với em gái thì mẹ của tôi mới về nhà. Tuy nhiên ví dụ đầu tiên cho thấy việc chơi với em gái diễn ra trong một khoảng thời gian dài trước khi mẹ về, trong khi ví dụ thứ hai chỉ cho thấy tình huống ngắn ngủi.
