Vietnam’s Youngest Artisan
Nguyen Tran Hiep, hailing from the northern province of Bac Ninh, has become Vietnam’s youngest artist at the age of 37. He managed to create a large-scale fine-art furniture studio through significant renovation and investment. Despite achieving this success, he faced numerous challenges along his journey.
In 2000, Nguyen Tran Hiep launched his fine-art wood carving workshop, using his family’s savings and a loan from the Youth Union of Bac Ninh province after learning the craft from a renowned artisan. Initially, his products struggled to reach a broad audience. At that time, many in his village also faced difficulties in crafting and opted to abandon their traditional work. While others sought different ways to earn a living, Hiep remained committed to turning his traditional craft into a thriving business. He spent the following years researching the market to identify the best customers for his products, targeting both foreign tourists and Chinese traders.
For tourists, his workshop primarily crafts small handicrafts and mementos, including tiny animals, artwork, tea trays, figurines, and rosaries. For Chinese clients, his workshop creates custom orders based on existing sample designs. Currently, his workshop, now known as Hiep Thang Fine Arts Cooperative, provides steady employment for 28 workers with an average monthly salary of 4-10 million dong.

I was astonished to see large drums placed in front of every house in the village. It’s said that four artisans need three days to craft a drum with a diameter of 1.5 meters. The process involves eight stages, with stretching the drumhead being the most difficult part as it requires precise sound evaluation. The remaining stages are less skill-intensive.
