I. Cách viết kết luận - 3 bước để tổng kết cho bài viết Writing band 7+
Many individuals encounter difficulties in crafting a conclusion in IELTS Writing. Simply summarizing in a single dull sentence is boring, but how does one expand without knowing what to include? Moreover, for those aiming at a higher band like 7.0+, what characteristics should a conclusion possess?
After completing the entire essay, the most essential thing needed is a quick and effective method of concluding, not necessarily eloquent but comprehensive enough, meeting the IELTS 7+ standard. So how should we go about it? Here are 3 steps to construct the conclusion for IELTS Writing that you should consider.
1. Step 1: Recapitulate the answer to the question (mandatory)
The most crucial aspect of writing a conclusion in IELTS Writing is to restate your argument clearly. The candidate's argument must be clearly expressed, starting with the Thesis Statement (at the end of the introduction). Therefore, our task is simply to paraphrase. Paraphrasing involves both paraphrasing topic-specific vocabulary and expressive vocabulary. In the examples below, you will clearly see this paraphrasing:
Example 1: Regarding the Universal Language topic
Opening:...If this scenario unfolds, despite some minor drawbacks, it will yield significant benefits for humanity... Let's paraphrase!
-
-
- Drawbacks ➡ disadvantages ➡ disadvantageous
- Benefits ➡ advantages
-
Conclusion: In summary, it can be concluded that adopting a single international language is not necessarily disadvantageous. There are evident advantages to having a universal language...
Example 2: Regarding the Gap Year topic
- Mở bài: ... While this trend is beneficial in some respects, its shortcomings are more significant for the followers of this trend. hãy cùng paraphrase nào!
-
-
- beneficial ➡ benefits ➡ gains
- shortcomings ➡ drawbacks
-
-
- Kết luận: In summary, there are some serious drawbacks associated with a gap year. These drawbacks far outweigh the potential gains.
2. Step 2: Restate the main points in the essay (most challenging)
Note which are the most prominent main points in your essay? Paraphrase and summarize them as concisely as possible. This skill isn't easy because condensing extensive ideas into a brief summary for the conclusion often requires vocabulary and grammar at a 7+ level. The secret here is to transform those main points into brief 'short examples' using 'such as' or 'including' to integrate them into the conclusion. You'll see in the example below:
Example 1: Regarding the Universal Language topic. In this example, the way to write a conclusion is to find the highlights in the essay:
-
- Ngôn ngữ chung giúp thế giới tăng cường trao đổi thương mại ➡ the growth of international trade
- Ngôn ngữ chung giúp các nước phát triển nguồn nhân lực trình độ cao ➡ the development of a stronger intellectual workforce
- Tại kết luận chúng ta sẽ có (sử dụng "such as"): In summary, one may conclude that the use of one international language is not necessarily disadvantageous. There are clear advantages of having a universal language, such as the growth of international trade and the development of a stronger intellectual workforce in every country.
Example 2: Regarding the Gap Year topic. In this example, my highlights in the essay are:
-
- Gap year khiến học sinh phải đương đầu vào khó khăn quá sớm (encounter difficulties too soon).
- Gap year có thể khiến xã hội thiếu nguồn nhân lực trình độ cao (intellectual labour shortage).
- Gap year là cơ hội cho học sinh học về kiến thức văn hóa, kỹ năng công việc và kinh nghiệm (acquire cultural knowledge, working skills and experience).
- Tại kết luận chúng ta sẽ có (sử dụng "such as" và "including"): In summary, there are some serious drawbacks associated with a gap year such as letting fresh school-leavers encounter overwhelming difficulties too soon and the prospect of future intellectual labour shortage. These drawbacks far outweigh the potential gains, including the chance for students to acquire cultural knowledge, working skills and experience.
3. Step 3: Provide recommendations/ future predictions (optional)
If steps 1 - 2 are completed, the conclusion may already be sufficiently lengthy for you to 'skip' step 3. However, if steps 1 - 2 result in only one or slightly brief sentence, the way to write a conclusion here is to continue writing recommendations/ predictions.
There's a common mistake of many people giving unrelated advice or predictions. Note that the way to write a conclusion in this sentence still has to strictly follow your reasoning, it's just another way of talking about your reasoning, that's all.
Example 1: Regarding the Universal Language topic
-
- Nếu bạn thấy ngôn ngữ chung này có nhiều lợi hơn, bạn có thể dự đoán các quốc gia sẽ dùng chung một ngôn ngữ trong tương lai.
- Bạn hãy thêm câu sau vào cuối kết luận: It is predicted that many countries will use the same language in the future.
Example 2: Regarding the Gap Year topic
-
- Nếu bạn thấy gap year có hại nhiều hơn có lợi, hãy .. khuyên các bạn trẻ đừng dại gì mà lao đầu vào.
- Bạn hãy thêm câu sau vào cuối kết luận: It is recommended that students should NOT take a year-off after finishing high school.
