2. What are your duties?
In my role as a receptionist, my main task involves warmly welcoming and assisting guests with their accommodations and providing them with valuable information about our hotel’s amenities and local attractions. Additionally, I handle phone calls, respond to emails, and address client inquiries, which initially took some time to grasp.
3. Why did you choose this type of work (or job)?
Honestly, as a university student majoring in Hotel Management, I see starting my career from a junior position as a valuable opportunity to gain practical experience and expand my network within the industry, even though it's not particularly lucrative.
Moreover, my primary goal at this stage is to accumulate as much experience as possible through both academic studies and practical work, while also maintaining a healthy work-life balance. That's why I chose this part-time role.
4. Is there another type of work you would prefer?
If I were to select a different occupation, I'd opt for being a chef specializing in Asian cuisine. It may sound unconventional, but my interest in cooking dates back to my childhood. I recall exploring my grandmother's kitchen while she prepared family dinners, observing as she added meat, vegetables, and spices to create delicious and delightful meals. It was truly remarkable, which is why I'm considering pursuing cooking as a side gig in my free time.
5. Are you satisfied with your job?
Honestly, I'm content with my current position, despite it not being the dream job for many people.
There are several reasons why I find it fulfilling and rewarding. Firstly, I get to interact and engage with visitors from diverse backgrounds, which allows me to learn about their cultures and viewpoints. Another reason is that working as a receptionist helps me enhance my soft skills such as effective communication, problem-solving, and organization. These skills are not only valuable for my current role but also crucial for career advancement in the future.
6. What aspects of your job do you enjoy?
I find several aspects of my job interesting and enjoyable, but what stands out the most is the supportive and collaborative atmosphere at my workplace, which plays a crucial role in my job satisfaction. I'm fortunate to work with a team that values open communication, teamwork, and mutual respect. This positive work environment greatly enhances my overall work satisfaction.
7. What are the challenges in your job?
Well, generally speaking, I do enjoy my role as a receptionist, but there are certain aspects that I find challenging and less enjoyable. For instance, dealing with unreasonable demands from some clients, such as requests for additional bathtubs or religious items upon their arrival. There was even one extreme case where a guest wanted his home bed moved into the hotel room. Handling such situations requires a lot of patience, empathy, and flexibility to ensure client satisfaction.
8. (Possibly)Do you miss being a student?
Honestly, I sometimes look back on my high school days when I could spend more time on my hobby, which was playing trumpet, and hanging out with friends. Those were all wonderful experiences, but now I need to move forward and apply the skills and knowledge I gained in the past to my current profession.
