If you're a fan of Xiaomi's tech gadgets, you've probably come across the name CIGA Design. Websites selling CIGA Design watches in Vietnam often tag it with Xiaomi's name. However, in essence, this Chinese watch brand has no connection to Xiaomi other than being invested in by the billionaire Lei Jun's conglomerate.In November 2021, the annual Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève awards took place. This is where the most prestigious watch brands compete in various categories, from the best overall watches to time machines designed for each gender, iconic awards, to awards for tourbillon and chronograph watches. While the 'Golden Hand' award went to the Bvlgari Octo Finissimo, and the best men's watch was awarded to the Grand Seiko White Birch SLGH005, in the category of watches priced under 3,500 Swiss Francs (3,700 USD), a Chinese name was announced for the first time: CIGA Design Blue Planet.Previously, it was just names from Switzerland and Japan competing against each other.The winning design of the 'Challenge Watch Prize' is a titanium alloy timepiece, 46mm in diameter with recessed lugs, and a silicon strap attached to the case bottom. In the center of the dial is an embossed aluminum plate of the Earth, with two outer rings displaying hours and minutes. On the website, CIGA Design Blue Planet is priced at 899 USD for the steel case version and 1,099 USD for the titanium alloy case version.
The Chinese designer says: 'Design plays a significant role in the watch industry. I drew inspiration from the Bauhaus design movement, so I began thinking about what significance the watch holds for the user, for the owner of that timepiece.'In 2014, CIGA Design made its debut exhibition at Baselworld, the long-standing watch fair in Switzerland. In the past 10 years, the Chinese brand has won 9 Red Dot Design Awards, 3 German Design Awards, and 2 iF Design Awards. However, until before November 2021, CIGA had never won an award in the watchmaking industry, only in design.And at the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève, the Chinese name surpassed many Swiss brands such as Doxa, Oris, Massena LAB, and anOrdain to win the Challenge Watch Prize. To achieve this, only CIGA's design experience was not enough.That's when another familiar name appeared for enthusiasts: Sea-Gull, the manufacturer of mechanical watch movements from Tianjin. Thanks to Sea-Gull, Blue Planet now has an automatic winding mechanism with a unique time display. The gear ratio has been changed. The aluminum dial engraved with the Earth's topography comes with a rotating compass icon to indicate both hours and minutes. The hour dial on the outermost ring remains stationary, while the minute dial rotates with the Earth. The corresponding time is the straight line in the middle of the compass icon, minute marker, and hour marker. For example, in the image below, the time is 7 hours 25 minutes:

Nếu xác nhận một cách công bằng, những chiếc đồng hồ CIGA Design giá rẻ khác có thể có khả năng đồng hồ kém, chỉ chạy được ít hơn 1 ngày, đôi khi chỉ mang tính chất thẩm mỹ. Kính sapphire cong điểm thêm vẻ đẹp cho hình ảnh họa sĩ trên mặt nhôm, biểu tượng của hành tinh xanh, ngôi nhà của chúng ta. Nhà thiết kế Zhang đã đạt được những gì ông mong muốn: Tạo ra một thứ mới mà không phức tạp, lộn xộn hoặc đắt đỏ. Chỉ cần nhìn vào biểu tượng la bàn và nhìn sang hai vòng số gần đó là bạn có thể đọc được giờ.
Đúng như đã nói, so với những chiếc đồng hồ khác mang thương hiệu CIGA Design, Blue Planet thực sự độc đáo với vẻ ngoại hình, thiết kế và hoàn thiện độc đáo, gần như 180 độ khác biệt. Điều đáng khen ngợi là, dù nhận được giải thưởng danh giá, Zhang và đồng đội vẫn giữ vững tư tưởng tạo ra những sản phẩm mà bất cứ ai cũng có thể sở hữu, với mức giá không đến 4 chữ số đô la Mỹ.
