In the old days, it was believed that consuming cỏ huyên would erase all worries and increase the chances of having a son, turning cỏ huyên into a sacred talisman.
Long before the prevalence of cỏ vong ưu beliefs, cỏ huyên held great value for its aesthetic beauty. Planting cỏ huyên in the garden and admiring its flowers all day would dispel worries.
Ancient herbal books once wrote: “Women who are not pregnant, carrying cỏ huyên will conceive and may have a son.”

There is a legend about cỏ huyên related to maternal love, recounted as follows:
During the chaotic Warring States period, amid conflicts among feudal states, men from every household were conscripted into the military. In one family with two sons, both the father and the youngest son were drafted. Before departing, the youngest son went to the Northern part of the house, taking some cỏ huyên plants with him. At the military camp, he, his elder brother, and father planted those plants in the northern direction of their camp. Each day, they reminisced about their mother and wives back home.
As time passed, and endless wars concluded, the young man returned after an extended journey. His father and elder brother had perished far away on the battlefield. The once-planted cỏ huyên remained vibrant in the camp. Returning to his hometown, the young man found his mother had aged and passed away. Gazing at the Northern part of the house, he felt a deep sense of nostalgia. The green cỏ huyên continued to flourish, becoming a sacred symbol of maternal love.
Embodying the essence of maternal love, the name 'vong ưu thảo' vividly depicts the mother's role with children, always close, comforting, and consoling them in times of hardship, dispelling all worries.
In Vietnam, apart from using cỏ huyên in cooking for luck and dispelling worries, people hang paintings of cỏ huyên in their homes and carry the fragrant cỏ huyên flowers to wish for a son. There is also a tradition of planting cỏ huyên in the Northern part of the house during the Vu Lan season to express gratitude to mothers.
