Whether you're on a budget or seeking chemical-free alternatives, crafting your own vanilla-scented perfume at home is the ideal choice. Despite seeming complex, with a little patience, concocting your own vanilla perfume is straightforward. Simply steep fresh vanilla beans in alcohol to produce a delightful vanilla essence, which can be blended with oil to form a delightful perfume oil. Apply it to your wrists, neck, and other pulse points for a delightful scent that lingers all day long.
Ingredients
- 8 to 10 vanilla beans
- Vodka
- Approximately 1 ounce jojoba oil
Steps
Mixing Vanilla with Vodka

Extract the vanilla bean paste by splitting the beans. For crafting the perfume's vanilla essence, procure fresh vanilla beans. Employ a sharp knife to halve 8 to 10 beans lengthwise, revealing the paste within. Scrape out the paste using the knife, and dice the bean husks. Deposit both the paste and husks into a small lidded glass jar.
- Buying vanilla beans in bulk is economical. This enables you to create larger perfume batches, suitable for gifting on special occasions.
- Extracting paste from more beans intensifies the vanilla essence. Adjust the quantity based on bean size, usually around 8 beans.
Add vodka to cover the vanilla paste. Once the vanilla paste is extracted and husks chopped, pour vodka into the glass jar. Ensure the liquid covers the paste and husks entirely, with an extra ¼-inch (6.35 mm) layer above the beans.
- Use vodka with a minimum proof of 70.

Let the vanilla infuse the vodka for several weeks. After combining vanilla paste, husks, and vodka, seal the jar and store it in a cool, dark spot for three weeks to three months. During this time, the vanilla essence and husks will imbue the vodka with fragrance and color.
- The longer the infusion period, the more potent the perfume's scent will be.
- Regularly inspect the essence's aroma and color during steeping. It's ready when the vanilla aroma is robust, and the color is deep and rich.
- Periodically shake the mixture while steeping to ensure even distribution of the scent throughout the liquid.
Filtering the Vanilla Essence

Evaluate the aroma of the liquid on your skin. Before creating the perfume oil, it's crucial to test the liquid on your skin. Apply a small amount onto your wrist and let it dry for 5 to 10 seconds. Smell it, and if satisfied with the scent, proceed to mix the perfume oil.
- If the vanilla fragrance seems weak on your skin, allow the mixture to steep for a longer duration.
Secure nylon stocking or cheesecloth over a glass jar. Choose a clean glass jar for storing your perfume. Cover the jar's opening with a piece of nylon stocking or cheesecloth, ensuring it extends over the sides. Secure the fabric with a rubber band or string.
- Ensure the selected jar or container has a lid for airtight storage.
Filter the vanilla essence through the fabric. Once the nylon or cheesecloth is in place, pour the vanilla and vodka mixture through it. This will capture any vanilla bean remnants or particles, straining them from the vanilla essence.
- You can preserve the leftover vanilla remnants for future perfume batches. Store them in an airtight jar and add fresh vanilla bean paste and husks when making a new batch.
Creating the Perfume Oil
Introduce jojoba oil to the jar containing the vanilla essence. Pour approximately 1 ounce (30 ml) of jojoba oil into the perfume jar or container containing the vanilla essence. Aim for double the quantity of oil compared to the vanilla essence, adjusting the amount as needed based on the volume of essence obtained.
- If preferred, sweet almond oil can be used as a substitute for jojoba oil.
Mix the oil and vanilla by shaking the jar. After sealing the jar, gently shake it to ensure thorough mixing of the vanilla essence and oil. Since they may separate over time, remember to shake before each use.

Store the perfume in a cool, dark location. Once the oil and vanilla essence are blended, the perfume oil is ready for use. When not in use, store the jar in a cool, dark place to maintain its quality.
- If stored correctly, the perfume oil should remain viable for approximately 3 to 4 months.
