What can factories and power plants do to reduce pollutants?5. Do you think many companies have been forced to reduce pollutants?6. Do you think the wind has any effect on pollution? How?
1. Is there more pollution now than in the past?
In my opinion, yes, the environment today is significantly more polluted than it was in the past. My mother often reminisces that during her childhood 50 years ago, the concept of “pollution” was virtually unknown. Nowadays, we face various forms of pollution: air, water, soil, and noise. This increase can largely be attributed to the rapid economic growth of the past three decades. While this growth has brought prosperity, it has also come at a cost. Environmental concerns have often been sidelined in favor of economic development. It's now imperative that we reassess this approach seriously.
2. In what manners can air pollution be effectively diminished?
In my opinion, there are several actions we could take, particularly here in Vietnam. Firstly, the primary source of air pollution stems from thermal power plants. Across Vietnam, there are hundreds of them burning large quantities of coal daily and emitting harmful gases into the atmosphere. Shutting them down is the first measure I would consider. Secondly, prohibiting diesel or petrol-driven vehicles would also aid in reducing exhaust emissions.
3. Do you think the urban area is cleaner or more polluted than the countryside? Why?
Fascinating. Many individuals would be surprised to hear this, yet the city, in reality, should be the cleaner one. One might assume that with less littering, the countryside would be cleaner to live in. However, it has essentially become a prime illegal dumping ground here in Vietnam due to inadequate surveillance and weak deterrents from authorities. All sorts of waste, rubbish, and construction debris are disposed of there. Virtually everywhere, left, right, and center.
4. What actions can factories and power plants take to decrease pollutants?
I lack a bright idea about this. All I can think of is to upgrade the technology somehow. That’s all I can say. Perhaps more attention could be given to what Norway and Sweden are doing. I heard they are currently the world-leading powerhouses in environmentally friendly technology.
5. Do you think many companies have been compelled to reduce pollutants?
Once again, I don’t know much about this. However, I do know that the Chinese have an innovative approach to subtly enforcing this kind of policy. They’ve established an entire market called the “industrial pollutants allowance trading platform.” It’s where businesses can trade their “limitations” on harmful pollutants with each other. This means that those willing to invest in greener technologies could generate more funds simply by selling their so-called “allowance” to other partners who are not yet ready to go green.
6. Do you believe the wind affects pollution? How?
I think wind plays a significant role in moving or dispersing pollutants in the air. Smog doesn’t just disappear magically. It has quietly accumulated over the years and has now reached a point where everyone in my city can see it with their own eyes whenever there’s no wind. If it weren’t for the wind pushing the smog away to the countryside, people would have realized the severity of the situation long ago.
