I want to share a memorable birthday from many years ago. Interestingly, I can't recall which specific birthday it was, but that detail doesn't matter. What stands out is when my grandparents gave me a €100 bill.
I hadn’t seen one because I was living in Vietnam at the time. This also made me aware of how different types of money are used by individuals around the world and how their exchange values fluctuate over time.
I had never given much thought to the intricacy or size of the many global financial systems, so this was a tremendous epiphany for me. Obviously, this one scenario wasn’t sufficient to provide me with all of that knowledge, but it was the scenario that made me realize how broad and fascinating the area could be.
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve become less and less likely to end up working in the financial industry, but I still think it’s fascinating and deserving of close examination because it has such a significant impact on the lives of everyone in the world. As these systems are so deeply ingrained in our cultures, it is almost impossible to live without interacting with them in some manner, they have these effects whether we want them to or not.

I will tell you about a special birthday of mine many years ago. It's strange that because it's been so long, I honestly can't remember which birthday it was, but that really doesn't matter. The fact that my grandparents gave me a €100 bill is what's important.
I had never seen it because at that time I was living in Vietnam. This also helped me understand how different currencies are used by individuals around the world and how their exchange values fluctuate over time.
I had never thought much about the complexity or scale of many global financial systems before, so this was a big eye-opener for me. Clearly, this scenario isn't enough to provide me with all that knowledge, but it made me realize how vast and intriguing this field can be.
As I grow older, I find myself less capable of working in the financial industry, but I still believe this field is very attractive and worthy of careful consideration because it significantly impacts people's lives worldwide. These systems have deeply ingrained into our culture, so we almost can't live without interacting with them in some way, and they have these impacts whether we want them or not.
Key Words

I was given a large sum of money as a surprise gift a few years ago from a family member. It was a very pleasant surprise, and I was quite appreciative of it. I wasn’t sure what to do with the money at first, but after some consideration, I chose to use it to take a trip to a location I had always wanted to visit.
I had always wanted to go to Japan and experience its culture, cuisine, and natural beauty. However, the trip’s cost had always been a deterrent. However, I understood that I could finally accomplish my ambition thanks to the gift money.
I planned my itinerary and spent weeks researching various travel choices before taking a two-week trip to Japan. I had a wonderful time there and was able to get to know the locals, eat different delicacies, see well-known sites, and make new friends.
Besides enabling me to embark on a once-in-a-lifetime vacation, the money I received as a gift also allowed me to create lasting memories that I will cherish forever. I will always be grateful for the thoughtful gift that provided me with an unforgettable experience.
The money not only funded my trip to Japan but also gave me the opportunity to reflect on the value of experiences over possessions. While receiving money as a gift was delightful, the memories and experiences are truly invaluable. This journey helped me realize the importance of spending time with loved ones and creating memories, rather than merely acquiring things.

3. IELTS Speaking Part 3: Describe a time when you received money as a gift
Please listen to Mytour's Podcast sample Part 3 with me:
3.1. What is the appeal of receiving complimentary gifts?
Yes, without a doubt, because it causes our thoughts to react strongly. When compared to purchasing something, receiving a free present makes you joyful. On other rare occasions, such as my birthday and festivals, someone again gives me a gift without charging me.
3.2. What is the rationale behind offering complimentary gifts at restaurants and shopping centers?
In order to increase sales, restaurants and shopping malls frequently offer freebies. People won’t be interested in visiting if there are no freebies offered. When individuals visit, they unwillingly make purchases as a type of marketing approach.
- Freebies (n): quà miễn phí
- Marketing approach (n): tiếp thị
3.3. Do freebies genuinely serve as incentives for customers to revisit?
Yes, it does because customers keep coming back and, occasionally, when they establish themselves as loyal clients, they receive a large bonus for making certain purchases. Because individuals encourage others to purchase from the same website they have been purchasing from, these things are also advantageous for businesses.
3.4. Could an excess of free gifts potentially lead to negative consequences?
Yes, without a doubt, as excessive freebie distribution breeds skepticism among consumers. The strength of the loyal clients may suffer in this situation.
The common consensus is that youngsters begin to appreciate the value of money around the age of three or four. Children start to understand the idea of money, its purposes, and it’s worth at this age.
They begin to understand that different coins and bills can be used to pay for products and services and have varying values. Children may become more familiar with financial ideas as they grow, such as budgeting, saving, and spending, and they may also have a deeper appreciation for the worth of money.
Yes, teaching kids to save money is both wise and necessary. Saving money is a crucial life skill that can aid kids in achieving their long-term objectives, establishing financial security, and forming positive attitudes toward money. Parents can help their children develop a feeling of financial responsibility and independence, which can be important traits for their future, by encouraging them to save money.
- Financial security (n): an ninh tài chính
Each family should decide whether or not to give money as a reward for their children depending on their own values and views. While some parents may want to reward their kids financially for good behavior or academic success, other parents may favor non-cash incentives like praise, experiences, or quality family time.
3.8. What are your thoughts on the statement that the love of money is the root of all evil?
Yes, when people love money too much, they become ungrateful and lose sight of their relationships, allegiances, and passion. They will occasionally even kill someone to make money.
On birthdays, anniversaries, marriages, and other special occasions, people give money as gifts. They believe that donating money is the most meaningful gift because recipients can use it anyway they see fit and purchase anything with it.
My opinion is that Vietnamese people still prefer cash to other payment methods like credit cards and mobile payments. Vietnamese marketplaces, street food, and tiny eateries might not accept credit cards because the country solely accepts cash.
I can also consider various other contributing factors, such as a lack of understanding of how digital payments function and their usage, concerns about one's financial privacy, and a potential rise in costs for small and medium-sized enterprises due to adopting electronic payments.
I can also think about a number of other factors that contribute, such as a lack of knowledge about how digital payment methods work and how to use them, concerns about one's financial privacy, and the result is that there may be an increase in costs for small and medium-sized enterprises that accept electronic payments.I hope through this article, you have gained more vocabulary and usage structures for the Describe a time when you received money as a gift type.
