Definition and usage of what kind of

Type

Theo từ điển Cambridge, danh từ “kind” /kaɪnd/ được định nghĩa là “a group with similar characteristics, or a particular type”: một nhóm sự vật hoặc sự việc có cùng tính chất với nhau. Kind thường được dùng chung với giới từ “of” (của). Kind có thể hiểu đơn giản là “loại”.

Ví dụ: "What kind of books do you usually prefer reading in your free time?" (Bạn thích đọc loại sách nào khi rảnh rỗi?)

"He's not the kind of person who gives up easily in the face of challenges." (Anh ấy không phải loại người dễ dàng bỏ cuộc khi gặp thử thách)

What type of

“What kind of” là cấu trúc dùng để hỏi “...loại nào?” Cấu trúc này có thể áp dụng cho vật, cho người hoặc sự việc.

Ví dụ: "What kind of music do you like?" (Bạn thích loại nhạc nào?) hoặc (Bạn thích dòng nhạc nào?)

Comparing Type of, Kind of, and Sort of

Ví dụ: "He's looking for a sort of vintage style in his clothing." (Anh ấy đang tìm kiếm loại quần áo hơi cổ điển một chút)

“What type of cake do you want for the party?” (Bạn muốn loại bánh nào cho bữa tiệc?)

“What kinds of music do you enjoy?” (Bạn thích thể loại nhạc nào?)

Ngoài cách dùng ở trên, kind of, sort of còn được dùng như một qualifier (từ làm gia tăng hoặc giảm nghĩa của một từ khác). Chúng có thể được hiểu theo nghĩa tiếng Việt là “đại loại như” hoặc “kiểu như”. Kind of sẽ được sử dụng nhiều hơn trong tiếng Anh-Mỹ và sort of sẽ được sử dụng nhiều hơn trong tiếng Anh-Anh.

Ví dụ:

• "I'm kind of hungry, but I could wait for dinner." (Tôi hơi đói nhưng tôi vẫn có thể chờ đến bữa tối. 

• "The weather today is sort of chilly, not too cold though." (Thời tiết hôm nay hơi se lạnh nhưng cũng không quá lạnh)

Trong một vài trường hợp, type of mang nghĩa chỉ một thể loại cụ thể hoặc một nhóm có đồng tính chất, trong khi kind of và sort of dùng để chỉ một nhóm có cùng tính chất nhưng mang tính khái quát và trừu tượng hơn.

Ví dụ:

• What type of book do you like? (Bạn thích thể loại sách nào?)

• He's always looking for a new sort of adventure. (Anh ấy luôn tìm kiếm loại trải nghiệm như vậy)

Trong câu đầu tiên, type of dùng để chỉ thể loại sách, mang tính cụ thể hơn. Câu thứ hai dùng sort of để chỉ trải nghiệm hoặc chuyến phiêu lưu - một khái niệm trừu tượng hơn.
