Some people say patriotism is the biggest cause of war. But others believe that when people are patriotic, they are more likely to take an interest in a country’s day-to-day running and therefore less likely to allow unscrupulous politicians to drive a country to war. Structure of the essay
Introduction
In this section, I will combine a paraphrase of the topic along with presenting my own viewpoint
“Over the course of history, countless deadly wars have been fought. Some contend that patriotism is the driving cause behind wars, but others argue that patriotic citizens would prevent their country from being involved in pointless wars. I personally and completely agree with the latter sentiment.”
Main Body (Paragraph 1)
The essay prompts us to analyze and interpret the connection between “patriotism” and “war”. Therefore, in the first paragraph of the main body, we will discuss the statement (1) patriotism is the primary cause leading to war.
I do not entirely agree with this argument, so I will add 1-2 counterargument sentences to make my subsequent argument more consistent and persuasive

“Admittedly, there have been wars waged on the basis of patriotism. The previous centuries witnessed numerous armed conflicts sparked by oppressed peoples of the world to liberate their countries from colonizers. Nevertheless, patriotism remains only one of the many causes of war. In a modern world where colonialism no longer exists, wars tended to be fought over natural resources and political agendas, rather than a righteous and patriotic cause. A prime example of this would be the US-Iraq war, in which the US government used disarming Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction as a pretext to invade the country and secure its oil reserves.”

“However, efforts to further said senseless wars would likely be impeded by patriotic citizens. Contrary to nationalists, who would blindly support any war advocated by unscrupulous politicians, patriots would rightly question the justification of a war. Should they find the reason for their government’s support of said war to be unjustifiable, they would oppose their country’s involvement in that war. An example to demonstrate this point would be the Vietnam war, in which the US government invaded Vietnam out of fear for the spread of communism. During that time, thousands of US citizens protested against that pointless war and demanded the withdrawal of their army from Vietnam. This is a testament that patriotism can be an impediment to senseless wars, rather than its biggest cause.”
