When it comes to Vietnamese holidays, the Lunar New Year always comes to mind first. Above all others, it's the most anticipated annual event for Vietnamese people worldwide.
The Lunar New Year typically occurs in the last ten days of January or the first twenty days of February, lasting for 3 to 4 days. This festival has been an integral part of Vietnamese tradition for thousands of years. Lunar New Year’s Eve is not just a special holiday but also an occasion for family reunions and intimate gatherings.
Given its significance as the most important holiday of the year, people pay great attention to their words and actions during this period. Common activities include cleaning and decorating homes, buying new clothes, making traditional “Chung” cake, offering to ancestors, giving “lucky money,” visiting temples and pagodas, and more.
For me personally and for Vietnamese people worldwide in general, Lunar New Year holds profound significance. It’s perhaps the only time when all family members can come together, share happiness, exchange good news, and anticipate better things in the coming year.
Despite the modern lifestyle and fast-paced living that shorten the Lunar New Year holiday, I believe it will never lose its essence, as its importance remains immense in every Vietnamese heart.

When it comes to national holidays, I’d like to delve into the Vietnamese New Year, also known as “Tet.” Tet is a special occasion celebrated widely annually in Vietnam. Indeed, it’s undeniably the most important and much-anticipated celebration of the year.
Observed on the first day of the first month in the Lunar Calendar, Tet spans the longest holiday period, up to 2 weeks. However, due to the increasingly hectic lifestyles of today’s generation, this holiday is becoming shorter each year.
The Vietnamese New Year holds multiple significances. It marks not just the start of a new year, but also symbolizes the cleansing of the challenges and setbacks of the past year, ushering in a new year full of good luck and joy. Hence, Vietnamese people begin Mytourating for this festival weeks prior to the actual day.
An essential part of the Mytouration is acquiring apricot and peach blossoms to adorn homes, symbolizing the onset of Spring and fresh beginnings. I recall spending hours with my mom at the market searching for the perfect peach blossoms every Tet. There’s truth in the saying, “Tet isn’t Tet without the presence of Hoa Mai (south) or Hoa Dao (north) in every household.”
Tet holds immense significance for every Vietnamese. Traditionally, we believe that celebrating Tet joyously brings prosperity and favorable outcomes for the year ahead.

I believe one of the most significant holidays in Vietnam is the Lunar New Year, which takes place in late January and early February. The official Lunar New Year or Tet holiday is observed from the 31st of December to the 3rd of January according to the Lunar calendar. However, the break is often extended to 5 or 7 days later and even longer for students.
Every year during this festival, people nationwide return to their hometowns and celebrate the occasion with their families and friends. Therefore, only during these days are the streets in major cities like Saigon and Hanoi not flooded with motorbikes during the daytime, and the atmosphere becomes quite tranquil at night.
Since everyone believes that welcoming the new year with a positive mindset, a clean environment, and new things will undoubtedly ensure a successful upcoming year, there is always a lot of buying and selling activities during the Tet holiday. In addition, thoroughly cleaning the entire house is also an essential part of the holiday. Every corner of the house must be spotless and ready for the new year.
I believe the reason why Vietnamese people cherish the Tet holiday so much is because it gives everyone the opportunity to express their respect and reminiscence for their ancestors as well as spend quality time with their beloved family members.
