Why does Pride Month start in June?
The incident that sparked the gay rights movement occurred in June 1969 at the Stonewall Inn in New York City's Greenwich Village. In the early hours of June 28, police raided this popular gathering place for young gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender people. Outside, the onlookers who saw the bar's patrons being taken away by the police became furious. Unlike previous occasions of police harassment against LGBTQ community members, where witnesses remained passive, this time the crowd heckled the police and threw coins and debris at them, forcing the police to barricade themselves inside the bar until reinforcements arrived. Subsequently, about 400 people rioted. Although additional police officers dispersed the crowd, riots continued sporadically outside the bar for the next five days. These events, known as the Stonewall riots (also known as the Stonewall uprising), ignited the gay rights movement in the United States.
