Embark on a Must-Visit to Truc Lam Phuong Nam Zen Monastery in the Mekong Delta
In Can Tho, those seeking a peaceful place to explore can choose Truc Lam Phuong Nam Zen Monastery, offering both tranquility and a spiritual haven.
Truc Lam Phuong Nam Zen Monastery is located in Nhon My hamlet, My Khanh commune, Phong Dien district, approximately 15 km from the city center of Can Tho. It is considered the largest Buddhist structure in the Southwestern region, covering an area of 38,016 square meters.
The structures here are designed and built in the architectural style of the Ly – Tran period, a significant factor that distinguishes them from the architectural styles of Khmer Southern or Northern Buddhist temples in the Southwestern region.
The Zen Monastery boasts spacious and expansive surroundings, incorporating various elements such as triple gates, main hall, bell tower, drum tower, rear hall, and more.
The grand triple gates are constructed in a curved roof style with red tiled roofs. At the center of the gate, a wooden sign with raised and gilded letters reads 'Truc Lam Phuong Nam Zen Monastery.' Beyond the gate is a vibrant red-tiled courtyard leading to the main hall, where visitors will encounter two rows of stone statues of Arhats placed in parallel, creating a sense of solemnity for the Zen Monastery.
To the right of the main hall courtyard is the bell tower with a soaring curved roof, mimicking the architectural style of a bell tower. All these structures are crafted from approximately 1,000 blocks of teak wood imported directly from South Africa.
As one ventures further inside, visitors will feel the fresh air along with the faint scent of burning incense, blending with the incense smoke to create a sense of antiquity and sanctity.
Inside the main hall, visitors will be astonished by colossal sculptures, especially the bronze statue of Buddha Shakyamuni enshrined in the main hall, weighing 3.5 tons, and the Dai Hong Chung weighing 1.5 tons. The Bodhisattva and various Patriarchs are carved from 800-year-old Du Sam wood, all intricately and uniquely carved.
The architectural design and arrangement of statues provide visitors with a sacred space, offering a serene yet intriguing ambiance for those wishing to explore.
Truc Lam Phuong Nam Zen Monastery is considered one of the most unique artistic creations in the land of the Western Delta. If you find yourself in the 'land of white rice and clear water' – Can Tho, give it a visit, light some incense for a calm and tranquil mind!
