Preparing for the Topik Korean language exam
1. What is the Korean language proficiency exam all about?
The TOPIK, abbreviated as 한국어능력시험 in Korean, is an exam organized annually by the National Institute for International Education of South Korea. Don't confuse this exam with the KBS Korean language proficiency test for Koreans. If you intend to study in Korea, you need to prepare for and pass the TOPIK exam. This is a crucial requirement for visa applications for studying abroad or working in large Korean companies and conglomerates.
2. Levels in the TOPIK exam
The TOPIK is divided into 6 levels equivalent to elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels. Levels 1 and 2 correspond to elementary, levels 3 and 4 correspond to intermediate, and levels 5 and 6 correspond to advanced levels.
a. Elementary level
– Level 1:
+ Có thể phát âm những câu tiếng Hàn cơ bản như tự giới thiệu, mua sắm, hỏi đường… và hiểu được các nội dung liên quan đến cuộc sống như gia đình, sở thích, thời tiết…
+ Kiến thức từ vựng khoảng 800 từ và các cấu trúc ngữ pháp cơ bản để có thể hoàn thành những câu đơn giản
– Cấp 2:
+ Thành thạo từ vựng khoảng 1500-2000 từ và có thể viết được các đoạn văn ngắn về các chủ đề quen thuộc.

b. Intermediate level
– Level 3:
+ No longer facing difficulties in discussing daily life, and able to perform basic language functions necessary for maintaining social relationships and using public facilities.
+ Able to differentiate basic characteristics between spoken and written language.
– Level 4
+ Able to speak effectively in public settings, maintain personal relationships, and handle some workplace communication (equivalent to level 3…)
+ Understand Korean culture and commonly used idioms.
+ Able to understand content from newspapers and current affairs.
c. Advanced level
– Level 5:
+ Can use language for work or research in specialized fields.
+ Can understand topics across all fields such as politics, economics, society, and culture.
+ Can accurately differentiate between spoken and written language.
– Level 6:
+ This is the highest level, meeting the standards like a Korean and encountering no obstacles in expressing meaning.
+ Strong communication and writing abilities.
