1. Why do people learn foreign languages?2. What makes a good foreign language teacher?3. Do you think grammar is important when learning foreign languages?4. Is it interesting to be foreign language teacher? Why?
1. Reasons for learning foreign languages?
There are numerous reasons why people choose to learn foreign languages. Many are drawn to the allure of exploring the unfamiliar. They aspire to immerse themselves in new cultures, and what better way than through language? Additionally, some are driven by their long-standing ambition to work abroad. Proficiency in the local language can significantly impact their career prospects. Lastly, for students aspiring to study abroad, proficiency exams like IELTS, SAT, TOEFL (for English), HSK (for Chinese), N1 N2 (for Japanese), and others are often required for admission. Failing to meet these requirements can hinder their chances of admission.
- Aspire to V / Aspire to something: to want something very much or hope to achieve something or be successful
- A perennial dream: a dream one have had for a long time
- To climb the ladder (expression): to become more successful at work, to get promoted to a higher position
2. Qualities of an effective foreign language teacher?
Well, as a student of English and French, I strongly believe that effective teaching methods are crucial for foreign language instructors. With adequate training, teachers can impart language concepts effectively. By 'effectively,' I mean presenting these concepts slowly and clearly to avoid overwhelming students. I've had French teachers in the past who, unfortunately, made learning French a daunting experience for me. You understand how complex French verb conjugations can be.
- Pedagogy methodologies (phrase): teaching methods
3. Do you think grammar is essential in learning foreign languages?
I do, especially when grammar sets a foreign language apart from a learner's native tongue. Consider Vietnamese learners, for instance. In Vietnamese, we only have three tenses. You say 'I eat ice cream,' and you can apply it to the past, future, or present with a simple word. However, English, with its 13 tenses, each with unique forms and exceptions, tells a different story. Without grasping the significance of English grammar, Vietnamese learners would find the learning process extremely challenging, and this applies to other languages as well.
4. Is teaching a foreign language an interesting career? Why?
Absolutely! For me, it's a definite yes. I believe it comes down to personal preference. I'm passionate about languages; anything related to the English language piques my interest. I aspire to instill the same enthusiasm in my students, and the journey varies with each individual, which I thoroughly enjoy.
- It boils down to something: If a situation or problem boils down to something, that is the main reason for it
- To arouse one’s curiosity: to make one curious about something and want to know more about it
