The maps illustrate the evolution of West Park Secondary School over a period of 60 years, from 1950 to 2010.
According to the maps, the construction of a parking lot was clearly the most significant change at the school. Moreover, residential houses and farmland had completely vanished by 2010.
In 1950, the school was rather modest and located to the south of the main road. Residential buildings in the northwest corner were removed in 1980 to make way for a parking lot and a science block. Farmland was also cleared to make space for a sports field, while the playground in the southeast area remained intact.
Between 1980 and 2010, the parking lot was extensively expanded, and the sports field was relocated to the east, thereby reducing the size of the playground. Meanwhile, the school's science block and main building retained their original positions by the main road.

In virtually every region of the globe, there exists a national curriculum established by the government and adhered to by all educational institutions. Some individuals, however, argue that this restricts teachers' autonomy to cater to the needs of their students. In my view, while the state-prescribed curriculum is adequate, a portion of lesson planning should remain within the purview of educators.
On one hand, having a national curriculum dictates the core subjects taught universally, ensuring equity among students. Removing these standardized curricula could reduce opportunities for students to excel. It could also mean that, for example, religious schools may focus solely on religious education at the expense of sciences, which contradicts the objective of providing a well-rounded education. Governments are tasked with determining the curriculum based on their understanding of children's capabilities, as the subjects taught in schools significantly influence a country's educational framework.
However, strictly adhering to a nationally-accepted curriculum isn't always ideal, as it can disadvantage children. Many subjects mandated by central authorities are overly comprehensive and fail to recognize that each child is uniquely different with distinct abilities. Besides rigorous academic work, it's crucial for children to develop soft skills, nurture their individual talents, and most importantly, cultivate a passion for learning. Therefore, teachers should have some latitude in offering essential subjects while de-prioritizing less essential ones.
In summary, I believe a national curriculum should continue to serve as a guiding framework, yet teachers should also be empowered to make necessary adjustments when required.
