How to Adjust Spacing Between Words in Word Properly
In this article, we'll guide you through a quick method to adjust spacing between words in Word that can be applied to all different versions of Word such as Word 2016, 2013, 2010, 2007, 2003.
1. Adjusting Spacing Between Words (Characters)
Step 1: Open the Word document file that has been drafted or is being drafted to proceed with adjustments.
You highlight the text portion or the entire document if you wish, then press the shortcut Ctrl + D
Step 2: The Font window appears -> you select Advanced, at the top you will see Spacing under Character Spacing
Step 3: In Spacing, there are 2 features that users need to pay attention to: Expanded and Condensed which allow users to expand or condense the text.
- Expanded: Allows you to expand the spacing between letters.
- Condensed: Allows you to condense letters together.
Step 4: Suppose you choose Expanded and select a value of 5, you will immediately see the difference in the Preview section.
You press OK -> the selected text will be adjusted with the spacing as you set above.
Step 5: If you choose Condensed with a similar value -> then click OK.
Immediately, the selected text will appear as shown below. The letters you see will automatically come closer together.

2. Adjust Spacing Between Lines, Paragraphs

Step 1: You select the text passage needing adjustment in spacing between lines or paragraphs.
Step 2: Right-click -> choose Paragraph....
Immediately, the Paragraph dialog box appears -> you select the Indents and Spacing tab.
Step 3: To adjust line spacing, paragraph spacing -> you select the Spacing item:
- Before/After: Allows users to adjust spacing between the current paragraph and the paragraphs above and below (measured in pt).
- Line spacing: Enables users to adjust spacing between lines within the same paragraph. Moreover, when you choose to expand lines using Exactly or Multiple, the At parameter allows you to specify spacing by a specific value (e.g., 6pt, 12pt...).
Suppose you choose Before = 6pt, Line spacing = 1.5 lines as shown below:
And the result is you receive the adjusted text as shown below. You'll notice the spacing is appropriately adjusted, looking very 'easy on the eyes.'
