This wiki guide explains how to modify the language that Alexa understands and speaks on Alexa-compatible devices. Currently, Alexa supports not only English, but also German, Spanish, French, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, and other languages that will be added soon. These are not simply translation tools, but Alexa is specifically designed for each language, making it easy for native speakers to use. Some features, such as Voice Purchasing, might not be available if you select a language that doesn’t match your current region.
Steps
Open the Alexa app. It’s the light blue app that looks like a speech bubble with a white outline.
- If you haven't installed it yet, download the Alexa app for Android from the Google Play Store or for iPhone from the App Store, then log in with your Amazon email and password.
Tap the gear icon. This icon is located at the bottom right corner and will open the settings menu.
Tap the device you wish to modify. If you haven't given the device a custom name, it will appear with a generic name like Echo or Echo Dot.
Scroll down and tap the Language option. The currently selected language will be displayed.
Tap the dropdown menu to select a different language. Choosing a different English-speaking region will make Alexa switch to that region's accent. Currently, Alexa doesn't support Vietnamese, but you can select from the following languages:
- Deutsch (German)
- English (United States)
- English (Canada)
- English (India)
- English (Australia)
- English (United Kingdom)
- 日本語 (Japanese)
- Español (España)
- Español (México)
- Français (France)
- Français (Canada)
- Italiano (Italy)
Click Save Changes. A warning will appear explaining how Alexa might behave differently if you select a new language.
Tap Yes, Change to confirm. Alexa's language will now be updated.
- You can always revert Alexa's language by following the same steps above.
Advice
- Although the actual language won't change, selecting a region with a different language than standard English will help Alexa better recognize your voice, especially if you're speaking with a specific accent.
- If you're learning German or Japanese, give it a try – this can also be a great way to practice. Start with simple commands, like asking for the time or the weather.
