This guide explains how to type a smiley face icon on an iPhone using the default keyboard, on an Android device with Google Keyboard (Gboard), on a Windows PC using the numeric keypad, and also covers how to input a smiley face on a Mac and Chromebook. Microsoft Office has its own shortcut for smiley icons as well.
Steps
On a Windows keyboard with a numeric keypad

Click where you want to insert the icon.
- If your keyboard does not have a dedicated numeric keypad, but has numbers integrated with other keys, press Fn or NumLock to activate the numeric keypad.
- Even if the keys are not labeled, the numeric keypad will function when Num Lock is enabled.

Press the Alt key.

Press the 1 key on your keyboard to display the ☺ symbol.

Press the 2 key on your keyboard to display the ☻ symbol.
On Windows, use Unicode in your program.

Click where you want to insert the symbol.
- This method is only effective in applications that support Unicode, such as WordPad.

Type 263a and press the keys Alt+X to generate the symbol ☺.

Type 263b and press the keys Alt+X to generate the symbol ☻.
On Mac

Click on the area where you want to insert the symbol.

Click on Edit (Edit) on the menu bar.

Click on Emoji & Symbols… to open the dialog box.

Alternatively, you can press the key combination ⌘+Control+spacebar to open the dialog box.

Click on the smiley face symbol you wish to add.
On Chromebook

Click on the spot where you want to insert the smiley face symbol.

Press the key combination Ctrl+⇧ Shift+U.

Type 263a and press the ↵ Enter key to generate the symbol ☺.

Type 283b and press the ↵ Enter key to generate the symbol ☻.
On Microsoft Office application

Click on the spot where you want to insert the smiley face symbol.

Type :). This action will instantly provide you with the symbol ☺.
On iPhone

Tap on the location where you want to insert the symbol.

Tap on 😀 . This is the option that opens the emoji keyboard, which is typically located on the left of the spacebar.
- If you've installed additional keyboards, tap and hold 🌐, then select Emoji.

Tap on the 😀 icon at the bottom of the screen.

Tap on the emoji you wish to add.
On Android (using Gboard)

Tap on the location where you want to insert the symbol.

Tap on ?123. This option is located to the left of the spacebar:
- Type :) to get the 🙂 symbol.
- Type :, then select ABC and type D to get the 😄 symbol.
