Skin tone, also known as skin undertone, is different from skin color, which is typically categorized into three basic shades: fair, medium, and dark. Your skin tone remains constant, regardless of sun exposure or seasonal changes in skin color, such as becoming lighter in winter or tanned in summer. There are three main skin tones: cool, warm, and neutral. Understanding your skin tone can be very helpful—it allows you to choose the right lipstick shade, find the best hair color for you, and pick clothing colors that make you look your best.
Steps
Identify Your Skin Tone

Wash your face, then wait for 15 minutes. Your skin should be clean and free of makeup, moisturizers, or toners. Allow your skin to rest for about 15 minutes before starting the test, as your skin may appear red after being touched multiple times during washing, making it difficult to determine your true undertone.

Find natural light sources. Artificial lighting can distort your skin tone, making it appear yellowish or greenish, which may lead to an inaccurate assessment of your undertone. Choose a spot with natural sunlight to determine your true undertone and avoid misjudgments.
- Try sitting by a window.
- If you have an outdoor seating area, go outside.

Examine the color of the veins on your wrist. This is a quick way to determine your undertone if your veins are visible. Place your hand in natural light and observe which color stands out.
- If you can’t categorize your veins as either greenish or blue, your skin has a neutral undertone. This is often the case for those with medium-toned skin.
- If your veins appear greenish, you have a warm undertone.
- If your veins look blue or purple, your undertone is cool.

Observe how your skin reacts to sunlight. Does your skin tan easily? Does it burn or develop freckles? The amount of melanin in your skin affects how it responds to sunlight and helps determine your undertone.
- If you tan easily and rarely burn, your skin has a higher melanin level, indicating a warm or neutral undertone.
- If you burn easily and don’t tan, your skin has less melanin and tends to have a cool undertone.
- Some women with darker skin may not burn easily but still have a cool undertone. Try using additional methods to confirm your undertone.

Expert Opinion: Generally, the darker the skin, the less sensitive it is to sunlight. However, other factors, such as certain medications or autoimmune conditions, can also increase light sensitivity.

Hold a white piece of paper next to your face. Look in the mirror and observe how your skin contrasts when placed next to the white paper. Your skin may appear yellow, red, pink, or pale, or may not show any of these tones and appear neutral.
- If your skin looks yellow or pale next to the white paper, you likely have a warm undertone.
- If your skin appears pink, rosy, or red, you likely have a cool undertone.
- If your skin looks pale, you may have medium-toned skin with a neutral undertone. A blend of brown and yellow tones creates this effect, which might make your skin look like it has a warm or neutral undertone, as it lies between these two ranges.
- If you can't pinpoint whether your skin looks yellow, medium-toned, or pink, you may have a neutral undertone. Neutral undertones generally match foundations in both warm and cool shades.

Use gold and silver foil or jewelry to determine your undertone. Hold a piece of gold foil in front of your face and observe how the reflection affects your skin. See if it makes your complexion look paler or if it brightens your skin. Then, try the same test with silver foil.
- If you look best with the gold foil, your undertone is warm.
- If the silver foil makes your skin appear brighter, your undertone is cool.
- If both the gold and silver foil enhance your appearance equally, you likely have a neutral undertone.
- If you don't have foil, try wearing both gold and silver jewelry and see which one complements your skin better.

Ask a friend to observe the skin behind your ear. If acne, redness, or other skin conditions make it hard to see your undertone, ask a friend to check the skin behind your ear, as this area is typically unaffected.
- Have them check the skin near the small fold behind your ear.
- If the skin appears yellow, your undertone is warm.
- If it looks pink or rosy, your undertone is cool.
- If they have difficulty identifying the undertone, they can hold a white piece of paper near that area. This will help them determine if the skin looks yellow or pink.

Look at your eye color. Eye color can be an important indicator of your undertone. Light-colored eyes like blue or light brown suggest a cool undertone, while amber eyes point to a warm undertone.
- For instance, if you have blue eyes, your undertone is likely cool, while brown eyes indicate a warm undertone.
Select lipstick shades

Try lip colors in blue or purple hues if you have a cool undertone. For example, opt for bright red, fuchsia, or mauve lipsticks. Avoid orange tones and very light shades, as they can make your skin look pale.
- If you have fair or light skin, go for raspberry red, earthy pinks, or nude shades (skin tones).
- If you have medium or tanned skin, choose berry red or cranberry red shades.
- If you have dark or deep skin, deep ruby red or burgundy with a metallic sheen will look great.

Pick red and orange lipsticks if you have a warm undertone. Suitable choices include coral, peachy pink, and bright red.
- If you have fair or light skin, bright red (this shade will make your teeth appear whiter), coral, light pink, or peachy nude will complement you well.
- If you have a tan or medium skin tone, try cherry red, pink, lavender, coral, or mauve. You can also experiment with orange, red-orange, copper, or brass shades.
- If you have dark or deep skin, go for brown tones, copper, brass, purple, caramel, plum, or deep wine red shades.

Experiment with various shades if you have a neutral undertone. Most lipstick shades will complement neutral undertones.
- If you have fair skin, try contrasting shades that make your skin stand out; choose coral shades for medium or tan skin, and purple-pink hues for darker skin.
Select the right blush shade

Choose pink tones if you have a cool undertone. Pink shades can neutralize redness, rosiness, and blue undertones, giving your skin a fresh glow.
- If you have fair skin, opt for light pinks.
- If you have medium or tan skin, go for bright pinks.
- If you have dark or deep skin, purple-pink shades are best. You can also brighten your look with peachy pink tones.

Choose a coral-toned blush if you have a warm undertone. Warm, rich shades often seen in fall are ideal for a radiant complexion.
- If you have fair skin, opt for a light coral or even a copper shade.
- If you have medium or tanned skin, try shades like apricot, lavender, peach, copper, or violet.
- If you have dark or deep skin, brick red, raisin, or orange shades work beautifully. Fuchsia also complements your skin well.

Experiment with different blush shades if you have a neutral undertone. With a neutral undertone, almost any blush shade will suit you. Try various tones to find the one you like best.
- If you have fair skin, try pink hues.
- If you have medium or tan skin, coral-pink tones are a great option.
- If you have deep or dark skin, bold blush shades work best for you.
Choose eye shadow

Warm up your cool undertone with soft shades. If you pick cool shades, your skin may appear pale. Instead, opt for warm tones that complement your natural undertone without too much contrast.
- If you have fair skin, go for soft earth tones, pinks, or greens.
- If you have medium or tan skin, experiment with pink or coral tones.
- If you have dark or deep skin, try bright jewel tones that really pop on your complexion.
Enhance your warm undertone with bold colors. If you have a warm undertone, brighten up your skin with bold hues that accentuate your natural tone.
- If you have fair skin, earth tones and copper shades are your best match.
- If you have medium or tan skin, copper, deep pink, and coral will complement you wonderfully.
- If you have dark or deep skin, bold shades like deep purple, navy, emerald, or reddish-brown will bring out your undertone beautifully.

Experiment with all shades in your eyeshadow palette if you have a neutral undertone. Have fun with a neutral undertone because any color will complement your skin.
- If you have fair skin, try jewel tones, earth tones, and metallic shades.
- If you have medium or tanned skin, copper, earth tones, pinks, and coral will look great.
- If you have dark or deep skin, try bold jewel tones.
Choose the right outfit

Pick earth tones and darker shades if you have a warm undertone. Those with a warm undertone should try neutral colors like beige, cream, coral, mustard yellow, ivory, gold, orange, brown, red-orange, and chartreuse.
- Add golden yellow and copper tones to your outfit, especially when selecting jewelry.

Choose shades of blue or lighter colors if you have a cool undertone. Those with a cool undertone should opt for colors like bright red, navy blue, purple, pink, green, plum, azure, fuchsia, and turquoise.
- Go for silver-toned outfits and silver jewelry.

Try any color if you have a neutral undertone. With a neutral undertone, you can wear any color from both the warm and cool color ranges. Most colors will look good on you.
- If you have a neutral undertone, you'll look great in metallic-colored outfits, as well as with metallic jewelry.
Choose the right hair color

Select the right shade of blonde for your skin tone. Blonde hair looks great on fair skin, but anyone can rock blonde hair with the right shade.
- If you have a cool undertone, go for platinum blonde or ash blonde.
- If you have a warm undertone, honey blonde or butterscotch shades will suit you best.
- If you have a neutral undertone, you're free to choose any shade of blonde.

Try a brown shade. Brown hair suits all skin tones and is easy to find a matching shade for.
- If you have a cool undertone, ash brown works well, especially when highlighted. Chestnut brown is also a great choice.
- Cool undertones pair nicely with dark brown shades like chocolate or mocha.
- If you have dark skin, go for brown shades lighter or darker than your skin tone. Cool undertones look great with deep black or coffee hues, while warm undertones will look radiant with shades like caramel or wood brown.
- If you have a neutral undertone, you can wear any shade of brown.

Stand out with a red shade. Red works with all skin tones when chosen correctly. However, fair skin often shines brighter with red tones.
- If you have fair skin with cool or neutral undertones, try soft reds like strawberry blonde.
- Fair skin with a warm undertone pairs well with deeper reds like ruby or brick red.
- Warm undertones look good with reddish browns, whether your skin is fair, medium, or dark.
- If you have a deeper, tan skin tone, it's best to avoid red as it can make your complexion look dull.
