If you're looking for a game or movie in Flash format that you can watch or play anytime, even without an internet connection, most SWF files can be downloaded by inspecting the webpage's source code. If you are using Firefox, you can take advantage of integrated tools to easily extract the SWF file.
Steps
Browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari
Go to the webpage containing the SWF file you wish to download. Ensure that all files are allowed to load fully on the site.
Right-click on the webpage and select "View Page Source". Alternatively, press the shortcut key Ctrl + U. This will open the HTML code of the webpage in a new tab or window.
- On a Mac, press the shortcut ⌘ Cmd+U
Press the key combination .Ctrl+F to open the "Find" box. This will help you locate SWF files more easily.
Type the term .swf in the Find box. All lines containing the term "swf" will be highlighted.
Click the arrow in the Find box to move through the search results.
Check if the URL path points to an SWF file with a title matching your desired content. There are many websites hosting SWF movies and games, so searching for "swf" may return numerous results. You must verify that the URL leads to a file matching the name of the movie or game you're trying to download.
- Make sure the URL path is still valid. Some websites like Newgrounds may have URLs with \/, which often do not allow downloads. Ensure that the found addresses are correctly formatted.
Copy the complete URL of the SWF file. Make sure that the URL ends with ".swf". Only then can you download the SWF files directly.
Paste the URL into a new tab. Press the ↵ Enter key to start downloading the SWF files. If the URL is copied correctly, the SWF files will load in the entire tab.
Open your browser's menu to save the file. The process will vary depending on the browser:
- For Chrome - Click the Chrome Menu (☰) (Customize and Control Chrome). Choose "Save page as" and then select the location where you want to save the SWF file.
- For Firefox and Internet Explorer - Click the File menu and select "Save Page as". Choose the location where you'd like to store the SWF file. If you can't find the File menu, press the Alt key. For Internet Explorer (Windows 8 and 8.1), you can use an alternative browser to download the SWF file. Simply use the copied URL to open it in an alternative browser, and after a few seconds, you’ll see a prompt: "Do you want to open or save". Choose save.
- For Safari - Click on the File menu and select "Save as". Choose where you want to save the SWF files.
Launch the SWF file. Once the file is downloaded, simply drag it into the already open browser window to run the file.
Firefox Browser
Load the page that contains the SWF file you wish to download. Make sure that all files are allowed to fully load on the webpage.
Right-click on the webpage and select "View Page Info".
Click on the "Media" tab. This will display a list of all the media files available on the webpage.
Click the "Type" column to sort the list by content type.
Scroll down and locate the Objects file.
Select the SWF file you wish to download. Typically, the names of the files will closely match the title of the video or game.
Click on .Save As.... Choose the location where you would like to store the file.
Launch the SWF file. Once the file is downloaded, simply drag it into an open browser window to start the file.
