While yellow is a vibrant hue, yellowing spots are far from desirable. Use these strategies to eliminate those stubborn yellow stains.
How to Eliminate Yellow Stains From:
Acetate, Fiberglass, Rayon, Silk, Triacetate, Wool
To begin, flush the stained area with water to loosen the stain and any leftover residue. Test a diluted mixture of 3% hydrogen peroxide and water on a hidden section of the fabric – if safe, carefully apply to the stain. Be sure to rinse the fabric with water immediately to prevent the solution from lingering. If the stain persists, it's best not to continue cleaning at home.
How to Eliminate Yellow Stains From:
Acrylic Fabric, Modacrylic, Nylon, Olefin, Polyester
Apply fresh lemon juice to the stain, but avoid letting it dry. Rinse thoroughly with water. If possible, launder the fabric. If laundering isn't an option, test Whink Rust Stain Remover on delicate fabrics or Bar Keepers Friend Cleanser & Polish on more durable fabrics. If safe to use, follow the package instructions. Then, flush the area with cool water and launder as soon as possible. Be cautious not to spill any rust remover on porcelain or enamel surfaces, as it could damage the finish.
How to Eliminate Yellow Stains From:
Carpet (synthetic or wool)
Apply a mixture of lemon juice and salt to the stain. Use a dampened pad to sponge the fabric, gently working from the center of the stain outward, then blot the area with an absorbent pad. If any stain persists, test Bar Keepers Friend Cleanser & Polish on an inconspicuous spot. If safe to use, apply to the stain as directed on the packaging. Rinse with water and blot any remaining liquid. Allow the fabric to dry.
How to Eliminate Yellow Stains From:
Cotton, Linen
Apply detergent directly to the stain and rinse well with water. Launder the fabric as soon as possible. If the stain remains, test Bar Keepers Friend Cleanser & Polish on a hidden area. If it’s safe, follow the package instructions and apply to the stain. Rinse thoroughly with water and wash the fabric again.
How to Eliminate Yellow Stains From:
Linoleum, Vinyl Tile
Dab the stain with a cloth or sponge soaked in warm soapy water mixed with a few drops of ammonia. Rinse with a cloth dampened in clean water, then wipe the area dry.
How to Remove Yellowing Spots From:
Porcelain Dishes, Porcelain Fixtures
Create a paste using borax and lemon juice. Apply it to the stain and let it sit to dry. Rinse with clean water, and repeat the process if needed. Once the stain is gone, rinse thoroughly and buff with a soft cloth.
These stain-fighting methods will have those yellow spots disappearing in no time.
