Some external peripherals, or USB devices are only compatible for use with USB 2.0 ports. You can determine if your computer has USB 2.0 ports by checking the system specifications on your Windows or Mac computer.
Follow these Steps
Checking USB Ports on Windows
Click the “Start” button and choose “Control Panel.” The Control Panel window will appear on your screen.
Access “System and Maintenance” and choose “Device Manager.

Double-click or open “Universal Serial Bus controllers.”
Check if any USB controllers are labeled as “Enhanced.”” If they are, your Windows computer is equipped with USB 2.0 ports.
Inspecting USB Ports on Mac OS X
Launch the Applications folder and select “Utilities.”
Launch “System Profiler.” The System Profiler window will appear on your screen.
Click on “USB” under Hardware in the left pane.
Examine the list of USB ports in the upper pane to determine if your computer includes any USB 2.0 ports. Each port will be clearly labeled as “USB 1.0,” “USB 2.0,” or “USB 3.0.”
- If the ports lack clear labels, click on each port and note the value next to “Speed” in the lower pane. If it displays “480 Mbp/sec,” the port supports 2.0 speeds.
