Refrigerators help keep our food fresh for longer, but they can't entirely halt the spoilage process. In other words, if fresh meat, produce, or dairy is left in the fridge too long, it will eventually decay and begin to emit unpleasant odors. And surprisingly, the classic trick of placing an open bowl or container of baking soda inside your fridge doesn’t do much to combat these odors.
Luckily, most modern refrigerators are now equipped with a built-in air filter that helps reduce strong smells. Like the filters in your washing machine and dishwasher, these fridge filters need to be cleaned or replaced regularly to function properly.
What role does an air filter play in a refrigerator?
Just like any other air filter in your home, the one in your refrigerator works by removing impurities from the air—specifically mineral buildup, as well as particles from food, dust, and mold. However, the air filter’s most prominent function is to eliminate odors within the appliance. If you’ve ever opened your fridge to grab a drink and were hit by a wave of unpleasant, stale air, you likely appreciate the importance and usefulness of the air filter.
How can I tell if my refrigerator has an air filter?
Most refrigerators built in the last ten years come with air filters, though some models featured them even earlier. The easiest way to find out if your refrigerator has one is to check the user manual or consult the manufacturer's guide. If your fridge does have an air filter, the manual will also explain where it's located, what type it is, and when and how to clean or replace it.
Where is the air filter located in the refrigerator?
The placement of the refrigerator's air filter depends on the make and model, but it's usually positioned near the back wall at the top of the fridge compartment. Other potential locations include inside the air vent grille, beneath the door bin, or in various spots along the fridge’s walls.
Is it possible to clean and reuse a refrigerator air filter?
While some refrigerators come with disposable air filters, others feature filters that can be cleaned and reused. To find out which type you have, check the owner’s manual or look it up online. If you don’t have access to the manual, simply remove the current air filter and check for serial numbers or any identifying marks. Alternatively, you can contact the manufacturer’s customer service, and they’ll help you determine the filter type and whether it’s reusable.
How to clean or replace your refrigerator’s air filter
After determining where your fridge’s air filter is located and whether it’s reusable or disposable, you can proceed with the cleaning or replacement. Keep in mind that the steps may vary slightly based on your refrigerator’s model and manufacturer, but here are the general steps to follow:
Here’s how to clean a reusable refrigerator air filter:
Find the compartment where the air filter is stored, then pull, twist, or lift it out to completely remove it.
Gently tap the filter against a garbage can to shake loose and remove as much debris as possible.
Use a vacuum attachment or a soft-bristled brush to carefully remove any remaining particles of debris.
Fill your sink, a bucket, or a basin with warm water and add a few drops of mild dish soap. Submerge the filter completely in the soapy water and let it soak for 10 to 15 minutes.
Remove the filter from the water and rinse it thoroughly with warm water. If any debris remains, use a soft-bristled brush to gently remove it and rinse the filter again with clean, warm water.
Allow the filter to air dry fully.
While the filter is drying, wipe down the area around the filter inside the fridge and clean the inside of the compartment using a clean, damp cloth.
Once both the filter and the compartment are dry, place the filter back into its compartment and replace the housing.
Here’s how to replace a disposable air filter:
Find the compartment where the air filter is stored, then pull, twist, or lift it out to remove it completely. Dispose of the old filter.
Use a clean, damp cloth to wipe down the area inside the refrigerator around the air filter and the inside of the housing compartment.
Examine the new air filter and locate the side marked “front.” If you still have the packaging, check the installation instructions if you’re unsure which side is the front.
Insert the new filter into the compartment with the side marked “front” facing outward.
Replace the housing compartment.

How frequently should you replace a refrigerator’s air filter?
Whether your refrigerator’s air filter is reusable or needs replacing, the general guideline is to maintain it every six months. Some fridges come with a light indicator that turns on when it’s time to clean or replace the filter, so keep an eye on that and the calendar. Also, trust your senses—if your fridge has a stronger odor than usual with no clear source, it could be time to clean or replace the filter as well.
