For homes relying on well water or even those connected to a municipal system, a water softener is a vital appliance that removes undesirable minerals from your tap water. These minerals can cause damage like staining and calcification in your pipes. The water softener works by capturing these minerals with resin beads and exchanging them for sodium before the water enters your home. Though this system provides excellent quality water, the resin tank may accumulate iron and other minerals over time.
The ideal moment to clean your resin tank is when the salt level is running low. This way, you avoid having to empty all the salt. Cleaning the tank involves two methods: first, disconnect the water softener by unplugging it, and then remove the resin tank by unscrewing the bolts and detaching the valve. Afterward, clean the tank using a bleach and water solution before reinstalling it.
An easier and more commonly used method for cleaning your tank is to purchase a special iron-removal product designed for water softeners, which can be found at most hardware stores. This product will chemically transform the iron into a soluble form that can be easily flushed away with water. Follow the instructions on the label regarding the appropriate amount to use, then remove the control panel cover and locate the manual regeneration button. Using a screwdriver, turn the button to the 'Service' position to begin the regeneration process and flush the wastewater through the system.
Before reassembling everything, be sure to remove any salt or iron buildup from the smaller components of the water softener using a cleaning solution and brush.
