Sushi is undoubtedly a delicious dish, but have you ever tried to put a unique spin on the traditional version? Transform it by using fruits to create a sweet, dessert-style sushi.
Ingredients
- 1.5 cups of sushi rice
- 2 cups of water
- 3 tablespoons of sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon of salt
- 1 cup of coconut milk
- 1.5 teaspoons of vanilla extract
- Fruits (any variety, such as pineapple, kiwi, mango, banana, strawberries, etc.)
Steps

Rinse the rice. Place the rice in a large bowl and add water. Use your hands to rinse the rice until the water turns milky white. Then, strain the water using a sieve.

Cook the rice. Combine water, rice, salt, and sugar in a heavy-bottomed pot and simmer. Reduce the heat and continue cooking for about 12-15 minutes.

Add coconut milk. Pour a small amount of coconut milk into the rice after the water has been fully absorbed.

Let the rice cool. Scoop the rice out of the pot and place it on a tray lined with parchment paper to cool.

Slice the fruits. Use a knife to cut the fruits into long strips, similar to how you would prepare fillings for traditional sushi.

Flatten the rice on plastic wrap. Use your hands or a spoon to press the rice into a rectangular shape.

Add the sliced fruits. Carefully place the fruit slices on about two-thirds of the rice, starting from the edge.

Roll the sushi. Once all your favorite fruits are added, tightly roll the sushi into a log shape, ensuring the edges are aligned.

Presentation. Arrange the sushi rolls on a plate, accompanied by thinly sliced cantaloupe as a substitute for pickled ginger and fresh fruit puree instead of soy sauce. Don’t forget to use chopsticks!
Tips
- Create nigiri by shaping the rice on a plate and placing a thin slice of fruit on top.
- Prepare a small bowl of water to dip your hands while rolling sushi to prevent sticking.
- Add a Japanese touch by enjoying fruit sushi with a warm cup of green tea.
- Drizzle some chocolate sauce on top for extra creativity and sweetness.
- Feel free to use a sushi mat if you have one available.
- You can substitute chocolate sauce for soy sauce or lemon-flavored yogurt for mustard.
Warnings
- Avoid stirring the rice while cooking before adding coconut milk, as this can ruin the final texture.
