In the role-playing games Pokémon Red and Blue, players can choose Bulbasaur as their starter Pokémon. However, in Pokémon Yellow, Pikachu is the default choice. Don't worry, though—you can still obtain Bulbasaur later on. Follow this guide to learn how to add Bulbasaur to your team!
Steps
Head to Cerulean City. First, make your way to Cerulean City, the area you'll reach after passing through Mt. Moon. The Gym Leader here is Misty, a key character in the region.
Ensure a free space for Bulbasaur. Make sure you always have an open slot in your party. If there’s no space available, you can send one of your Pokémon to the PC at the Cerulean Pokémon Center.
Always make Pikachu happy. You can approach Pikachu and talk to it by pressing the “A” button. A smiley face will appear above Pikachu's head when it's well taken care of. If that doesn’t work, here are a few simple ways to make it happy:
- Use items (e.g., Health potions) on Pikachu, even when its health is full. You may need to use the potion several times for Pikachu to feel happy.
- Level up Pikachu. This will also boost its happiness.
- Challenging a Gym Leader will increase Pikachu's happiness.
- Avoid letting Pikachu faint, as this will lower its happiness level.
- Sending Pikachu to a box will slightly reduce its happiness.
Head to Melanie’s house. Next, head to the house next to the Pokémon Center. You’ll find Melanie and Bulbasaur there. Approach her and talk to her. She will introduce herself as a Pokémon caretaker.
Obtain Bulbasaur. Melanie will recognize that you’ve taken great care of Pikachu. She’ll ask if you want Bulbasaur. Respond with yes, and she will allow you to take Bulbasaur into your team.
Tips
- You can purchase Potions at PokéMart (Pokémon Center).
- If Pikachu isn’t happy after using an item 5 times, try another 5 uses and repeat... Eventually, Pikachu will feel happy.
- Another way to get Bulbasaur is by using the Trade feature in the game with Pokémon Red, Blue, or Yellow.
