This guide explains how to add contacts to your email account by opening a VCF file. A VCF file, also known as a "vCard" file, stores contact information that can be read and imported into email services like Gmail, iCloud, Yahoo, and Outlook on your computer. However, VCF files can only be used on a computer.
Steps
Using Gmail
Open Google Contacts. Visit https://contacts.google.com/ using your computer's browser. This will open your Gmail contacts if you're already logged into your Google account.
- If you're not logged in, enter your Gmail address and password when prompted to proceed.
- If the Google Contacts page doesn't display the correct information, click on the profile icon in the top-right corner of the page, then select the account you want to use from the menu. If you don't see your account, click Add account and enter your email address and password to log in.
Click on More. This option is located on the left side of the contacts page. Clicking it will reveal additional choices under the More heading.
Click on Import. This option is found under the More heading on the left side of the contacts page. A new window will appear on the screen.
Click on CSV or vCard file at the bottom of the options list.
Click on SELECT FILE. You will see this blue button in the displayed window.
Select the VCF file. Click on the VCF file you wish to open in Gmail.
Click on Open. This option is located at the bottom-right corner of the window. The file will be uploaded after this action.
Click on IMPORT in the displayed window. The contact information from your VCF file will be immediately added to Gmail.
Using iCloud
Open iCloud. Visit https://www.icloud.com/ using your computer's browser. The iCloud dashboard will appear if you are already logged in.
- If you are not logged in, enter your email address and password when prompted.
Click on Contacts. This option is in the first row of the dashboard. Your contacts will be displayed on the screen after this action.
Click on Import vCard…. This option is in the displayed menu. It will open the File Explorer (on Windows) or Finder (on Mac).
Select the VCF file. Click on the VCF file you want to open using iCloud.
Click on Open. This option is located at the bottom-right corner of the window. The contact information from the file will be added to your iCloud contacts.
Using Yahoo
Open Yahoo. Visit https://mail.yahoo.com/ using your computer's browser. You will see your Yahoo inbox if you are already logged in.
- If you are not logged in, enter your email address and password when prompted.
Click on the "Contacts" icon. This is the address book icon located at the top-right corner of the window. Clicking it will open your contacts in a new tab.
- If you are using the older version of Yahoo, click on the address book icon with a person's silhouette at the top-left corner of the window.
Click on Import Contacts. This option is located in the middle column of the contacts page.
Click on Import next to the "File Upload" heading. Another window will appear on the screen.
Click on Choose file at the top of the displayed window. This will open the File Explorer (on Windows) or Finder (on Mac).
Select the VCF file. Click on the VCF file you want to open in Yahoo.
Click on Open. This option is located at the bottom-right corner of the window. Your VCF file will be uploaded to the displayed window.
Click on Import at the bottom of the displayed window. This will import your contacts into Yahoo.
Using Outlook on a Computer
Open Outlook. Click or double-click on the Outlook 2016 program with the white "O" icon on a blue background.
- Note that the web version of Outlook does not support VCF files.
- To import a vCard file on Mac, click on the file, select File, choose Open With, and then select Microsoft Outlook. You can click Save & Close when prompted.
Click on File. This option is located at the top-left corner of the window. Another menu will appear here.
Click on Open & Export. This option is displayed in the left-hand menu.
Click on Import/Export. This option is located in the middle column. A new window will appear after clicking.
Click on Import a VCARD file. You will see this option in the displayed window.
Click on Next at the bottom of the displayed window. The File Explorer window will appear on the screen after clicking.
Select the VCF file. Click on the VCF file you want to import.
Click on Open. This option is located at the bottom-right corner of the window. This action will import the contact information from the VCF file into your Outlook contacts.
